Paz L. Acosta, age 106, long-time resident of Chicago, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
Born January 24, 1919 in Dulag, Leyte, Philippines; she was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Antonio N. Acosta; loving mother of Gina (Robert) Acosta Lieberman, Cecilia (Peter) Podlusky, and Ernesto (Connie) Acosta; cherished grandmother of 8; proud great-grandmother of many; and dear sister to Carmen L. Buencamino.
Paz was a graduate of Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcin in Cebu City, after which she obtained her nursing education. During WWII, she worked as an RN in the battlefields, and she survived the infamous Bataan Death March. She also worked at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila.
Upon moving to Chicago in 1960, Paz cared for patients at Cook County General Hospital (now known as John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County), St. Francis Cabrini Hospital, and Columbus Hospital.
Paz was known to her family and friends as being an avid dancer. Her home was open to friends (and friends of friends), as a place where they found someone to share their worries, laugh at life's foibles, and enjoy good food. People were amazed that she played the piano from memory well into her nineties. She also enjoyed playing duets with a young violinist neighbor, who was happy to have found an elderly woman who could play the classical repertoire he enjoyed.
As Paz outlived her peers, she formed new friendships and enjoyed an active social life. Paz will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
