Fern Ellen (Edwards) Lewis: A Life Remembered

Fern Ellen (Edwards) Lewis was born on May 12, 1933, in White Oak, Oklahoma. She was the youngest of four children born to Elbert Wesley Edwards and Etna Louisa (Groves) Edwards. Fern grew up in Oklahoma City and later moved to Purcell, where she graduated from high school in 1951.

After graduation Fern moved to Oklahoma City. On January 24, 1959, Fern married George (Squeaker) Lewis in Maracaibo, Venezuela, South America. Together, they raised two children: Lisa Lewis Thompson, who was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, and Michael Lewis, who was born in Enid, Oklahoma.

As an oilfield family Fern and Squeaker moved from Maracaibo, Venezuela to Enid, Oklahoma and then to Woodward, Oklahoma. In 1978 Fern and Squeaker settled in Elk City. Fern was an active and faithful member of the Elk City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Elk City Golf and Country Club, as well as its ladies group, she loved helping with the Elk City Oil and Gas Tournament every year. She worked in real estate for 12 years with Jack Sanders Century 21 Real Estate. Fern enjoyed helping with Meals on Wheels, traveling, reading, (her favorite author was Stuart Woods), playing cards, golfing, and playing Bunco; but she did not enjoy shopping.

Fern is preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Etna Edwards; her husband, George (Squeaker) Lewis; her son, Michael Lewis; her sister, Joyce Perry; and her brothers, Wayne Edwards and Jack Edwards.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Thompson of Oklahoma City; granddaughter, Lauren Donald and husband David of Tulsa; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Lyla Donald. Fern is also survived by her sister-in-law, Peggy Edwards; many nieces and nephews; brothers-and sisters-in-law; and a host of friends.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Elk City Nursing Center and Comforting Hands Hospice staff for their loving care over the past four years.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elk City United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or The Elk City Carnegie Public Library in care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.O. Box 707, Elk City, Oklahoma 73648.

Her family will gather privately to celebrate her life.
