Florence Howell Gravitt, 93, of Chase City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025. Florence was born and raised in Chase City and graduated from Chase City High School. She went on to work as a long-distance telephone operator for Contel, dedicating approximately 35 years to the company. In the late 1950s, she was crowned Miss Chase City, a title she wore with grace and pride. A kind and gentle soul, Florence had a deep love for animals, especially her cats and dogs. She never met a stray she wouldn't feed, and her compassion for all living things was evident to all who knew her. She is survived by her nieces, Vickie Newcomb and Brenda Howell of Chase City; her nephew, Michael Howell (Cathi) of Puyallup, Washington; nieces Sara Howell (Jeff), Kaitlan Schomaker (Jeff) and nephews Jared Howell (Sammy), Kevin Newcomb (Shauna) J.R. Newcomb (Rhonda) and numerous great nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Florence was preceded in death by her beloved son, Wayne E. Gravitt; her sisters, Edith H. Inge and Mable Crowe; and her brother, James Edward Howell. Patricia Watson, Betty Foster, and Kathy Rickman were caregivers to Florence and became good friends and like family to her. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, July 21 at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. Wood Funeral Service is serving the family. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Lake Country S.P.C.A. at P.O. 14, Clarksville, Virginia 23927. Condolences may be expressed at www.woodfuneralservice.com.
