Florence Ellen Karvelis, known affectionately to many as Ellen, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on July 19, 1927, in DeKalb, IL, Florence Ellen was a woman of humor, loyalty, and boundless love. Her supportive nature and engaging personality touched the hearts of many in her long and fulfilling life.
A lifelong resident of Illinois, Florence Ellen relocated from DeKalb, her childhood home, to Genoa, where she raised her family, before settling in Pecatonica in her later years. On June 23, 1951, she married the love of her life Norbert Karvelis, and together they built a loving home that was always filled with laughter and warmth. Florence Ellen was a dedicated librarian at the Genoa Public Library until her retirement, cherishing the joy of sharing stories with others. Her love for books was only surpassed by her love for her family and her adoration for the holiday season, especially Halloween. A member of the Reading with Grannies club, where the elementary children practiced their reading skills. In her younger years, she was actively involved in the St. Catherine of Genoa Catholic Church, carrying her strong faith throughout her life.
Florence Ellen leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. She is survived by her children, John (Gina) Karvelis, Mark Karvelis, and Carol (Gail) Ruback. Her grandchildren, Noah (Carmen) Karvelis, Elijah (Sasha Gehkt) Karvelis, Lily Karvelis, and Craig Ruback, and great-grandson Francis Karvelis, will carry forward her spirit of love and humor. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, Peter and Mary Paulsen, and her son, Blaine Karvelis and three sisters.
Florence Ellen's life was a testament to the power of love, humor, and loyalty. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched. We invite you to share your memories of Florence Ellen and upload photos to the memorial page, celebrating her life and the joy she brought to us all.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 31, 2025 at St. Catherine of Genoa Catholic Church, 340 South Stott Street, Genoa, IL with Fr. Dennis Morrissy officiating. Final Resting Place to be St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery, Genoa, IL. Cremation Rites to be Accorded. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass, Friday.

I am sorry about the passing of Ms. Ellen. We had a lot of fun and laughs the 2 years I spent with her. I so enjoyed the stories she would tell me and she definitely taught me a lot of things I never knew!!! She was one tough lady with a lot of spunk.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
