MS. FLORY JEAN TAYLOR BURNEY, 85
Flory Jean Taylor Burney was born November 15,1938 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was a proud native of Shreveport (Lakeside area) and a resident of Hollywood Heights. Flory graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1956, and later went on to attend St. Phyllis College and Grambling State University.
Flory was a multiskilled woman which allowed her to explore several career paths from administrative work to tailoring. She held her final and longest role with the Caddo Parish Juvenile Detention Center, where she retired as a supervisor.
Throughout her life, Flory was well known as a woman of faith and service. In her youth and into adulthood, she attended Central Free Methodist. Later in life, she became a member of Galilee Baptist Church as well. In church, Flory could be found participating on a committee or teaching VBS lessons.
As a woman of service, Flory was a member of the Zeta Amicae of Shreveport, in which she was president in 1977. Additionally, she was involved in community service and social justice during the Shreveport Civil Rights movement with her late ex-husband Judge Burney. Later in life, she participated in the Foster Grandparent program.
In her personal time, Flory enjoyed traveling, shopping, sewing, and spending time with family.
She was preceded in death by Jonathan Burney (son), Herbert Kinnard (brother), Mattie Griffin (sister), Judge Burney (ex-husband). She leaves to cherish Lisa Renee Burney (daughter) and Jelisa Burney-Lewis (granddaughter).
Services for Ms. Flory Burney will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11am at the Chapel of Good Samaritan Funeral Home. Open Visitation is 1pm to 8pm Friday, February 16, 2024, at Good Samaritan Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Caldwell Cemetery in Plain Dealing, La.
