Mr. Melvin Foster Weed, 96, of the Red Oak community passed away Monday, December 15, 2025 at his residence.
Mr. Weed was born in the outskirts of Brantley, AL in a little community known as Weedville; in Crenshaw County to Sam Gilbert and Jessie Lee Godwin Weed.
He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1957 when he was transferred to the reserve component of the Army until honorably being discharged in 1963. Mr. Weed worked form Sessions Grocery in Andalusia for a short time before returning to college and receiving a business degree.
Years later, he obtained employment with the state of Alabama Dept of Revenue followed by a job in the Covington County Probate office. He then was elected Tax Assessor of Covington County, which later combined with Tax Collector's office to become the Revenue Commission office.
Upon retirement, he and Jeanette continued a full and happy leisure life shared with family, their grandchildren, great grandchildren and lots of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, December 16th at Red Oak Baptist Church with Brother Herbert Brown officiating and Foreman Funeral Home directing. The interment will follow in Red Oak Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church at 10 AM Tuesday.
He is survived his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Weed and Randall Copeland; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Holloway; grandson, David (Erica) Copeland and their children, Judd, Emma and Berkleigh; grandson, Adam (Anna) Copeland and their sons, Andrew and Matthew; granddaughter, Ashley Copeland Bess and her children, Brayden, Kelley and Blakely Bess and Georgia Grace Copeland; grandson, Hunter (McKenna) Cheshire and children, Tayslee and Hadlee. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam Gilbert Weed and Jessie Lee Godwin Weed; two brothers, Sam Wilson (Mary) Weed and William Horace Weed; and sister, Cubiedeen (Charlie Frank) Bowers.
The family wishes to acknowledge and gratefully thank Mr. Weed's caregivers, Charity McCart and Kanda Gilmore for the special care given in his last days and also Dayspring Hospice for the special service and care they provided.
Pallbearers will be Randall Copeland, David Copeland, Adam Copeland, Hunter Cheshire, Michael Cheshire, and Harvie Cheshire
Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Norris, Danny Cheshire, Josh Cheshire, Branden Cheshire, and Bradley Cheshire.
