Frances James Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Marks Mortuary on Dec. 29, 2025.
Frances Maxine (Smith) James, age 89, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, surrounded by her loving family, who remained by her side.

She was born on July 13, 1936, in Hartford, Illinois, the eldest of six daughters of Frank Orval and Mildred Maxine (Grant) Smith.

She married Lawrence "Jesse" Edward James, and together they built a beautiful family. Lawrence preceded her in death on September 28, 2024.

Frances devoted many years of her professional life as an executive secretary for Emerson Electric, where she was admired for her work ethic, professionalism, and quiet strength, before retiring. Known for her quick wit and spirited nature, Frances had a presence that could not be ignored. Her genuine heart and lively personality made her beloved by everyone she met. Above all else, Frances cherished her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love knew no limits and whose support was unwavering.

She is survived by her son, Jack R. (Marlene) James of Collinsville; her daughter, DeAnna Maxine (James) Humphrey of Maryville; four grandchildren, Jaclyn Nichole James, Dylan Thomas James, Kaley Maxine Humphrey, and Payten Renee' Humphrey; six great-grandchildren, Steven Jay Hart III, Olivia Marie Cundiff, Kenzi Fae James, Emberly Faith James, Layne Austin Campbell, and Anakin Oliver Brown; and her sister, Beverly Sue Lavite.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her life partner, Lawrence Edward James; her beloved son, Wesley Frank James; her cherished grandson, Cody James Duff; and her treasured sisters, Wilma Dobey, Shirley Smith, Dorothy Robinette, and Jenny Neer. Frances leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and family devotion that will continue through the generations she so deeply adored. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, with Frank Akers officiating.
