Frances Jeanine "Jean" Ladewig went to her eternal home on Thursday, January 30, 2025 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Jean was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on July 10, 1953 while her father was in the Air Force. Her early years were spent in Massachusetts and New Hampshire before moving on to Davenport, Iowa. She had fond memories of these times with her four brothers and sisters camping on the beach and road trips back to Oklahoma City to visit family. She graduated from Central High School in Davenport Iowa in 1971.
In 1973 she had her only child Amber Nicole (Nicky) Hernandez. Jean loved music and in her early 20s you could find her running around Davenport with her sister Cheri and brother Frank listening to local bands and bigger names alike or dancing around the living room with her sisters to "Brick House" by The Commodores. Rumor has it Nicky would even accompany them on some of their escapades and saw quite a few games of pinball with Jean and her sister Cheri.
After Iowa, Jean and her daughter would go on to live in Missouri, Florida, New York, Arkansas and Texas, but were always drawn back to Oklahoma. Jean was a woman of many trades and supported her daughter by waitressing, working retail, cooking and baking, cleaning houses and working as a seamstress. Nicky was often sporting the latest fashions as a child like culottes and patchwork vests lovingly stitched by her mom. Nicky grew up knowing her mom would support her in every way she possibly could and that she was truly loved unconditionally.
In 1992 Jean welcomed her first grandchild, Skyler. He was the apple of her eye and they loved to collect treasures like rocks and spend time outdoors. Jean was thankful when her daughter wed the love of her life, Diego Hernandez, and welcomed two more grandchildren, Gavin and Siena. She was immensely proud of all of her grandchildren. She loved cheering on their accomplishments and spending time with them doing crafts, working puzzles, collecting treasures on walks and shells on the beach, listening to music and just hanging out as they told her about their day.
Jean was an animal lover of all kinds, but especially birds. She had many parrots and cockatiels over the years, most recently Jessie and Lala. Jean was a loving and steadfast support to her daughter Nicky and son-in-law Diego. She was by their side through 2 cancer battles and helped to make life as normal as possible for her grandchildren.
Jean made the move to Texas five years ago to be closer to her children and grandchildren. It was such a blessing to them that she was closer. She would often pop over from her garage apartment that she shared with her birds with cookies, a cheese cake or banana bread. The neighborhood birds (and squirrels) were always at her place eating the treats and seed she would put out for them and she enjoyed exchanging videos of their antics with Diego from the camera feeder he had purchased her.
During her later years, Jean enjoyed traveling with her family, working a puzzle, reading a good book, watching her favorite show, or spending time with her family. She was incredibly creative and many of her beloved family members cherish one of her creations gifted to them over the years. Jean was loving, kind, empathetic, accepting, and smart. She is irreplaceable to her loving family and their lives are better for having known her.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Reathel and Frank Keeler; older brother, Chuck Keeler; sister-in-law, Sharon Keeler; grandparents, Bertha and Merle Hitson; and nephew, Mitchell Morris.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Nicky Hernandez and son-in-law Diego Hernandez; her grandchildren, Skyler Harrison, Gavin Hernandez and Siena Hernandez; brother, Frank Keeler; sisters, Cheri Bannister and Lisa Morris; sister-in-law, Debby and brother-in-law Jim; and her loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Jean's honor on Monday February 3, 2025 at 11:00 am at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service Chapel at 3925 N. Asbury Avenue, Bethany, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite animal charity.
