Frances Marie Sears, known affectionately as Fran to her loved ones, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at Marshfield Medical Center-Weston. Born on February 15, 1947, to the late Harold and Joyce (Potter) Anderson, Fran lived a life defined by courage, resilience, and unshakable independence.
Fran met the love of her life, Jesse Wayne Penrod, when she was just 17 years old at a café. The two married on March 21, 1965, and together raised two sons, Anthony and Russell. Though life took them in different directions, their bond remained through the family they built.
From birth, Fran faced challenges most never know. Born with congenital cataracts, she lost her sight completely by the age of 19. But if blindness slowed her, no one ever noticed. Fran graduated high school and went on to earn her associate's degree-a testament to her determination and drive. She then built a thriving professional life, owning and operating several successful businesses, including a collections agency and an industrial delivery service. Later, she dedicated herself to helping others as a drug and alcohol counselor, touching many lives along the way.
Fran was a force of nature-strong, fierce, and fueled by her signature combination of coffee and cigarettes. She enjoyed a great love for plants and flowering plants and had an incredible green thumb. She could make anything grow. She loved to travel, often journeying across the U.S. and Canada to speak about blindness and inspire others. In her quieter moments, she found joy in crocheting beautiful blankets that were treasured by all who received them.
Despite her blindness, Fran's independence was legendary. She navigated her world with confidence, cane in hand, and surrounded herself with friends from every walk of life. She lived life entirely on her own terms.
Fran is survived by her two sons, Anthony (Julie Rase) and Russell (Cindy); six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her sisters Barbara, Kathleen, Julie, and Susan. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Patricia.
Fran's life was a testament to perseverance, love, and strength. To know her was to admire her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Ladysmith, WI. Mid Wisconsin Cremation Society is assisting the family.
