Michael Sears Obituary

Our beloved baby boy, Michael Garrett Sears, 16, passed away in Layton, Utah, on November 10, 2025. Born as the University of Utah’s first baby of 2009, on January 1st, he was destined to be a fan. Michael, known by Garrett to his closest family and friends, filled every room with laughter when he would make one of his notorious funny faces. He was adventurous, artistic, and athletic, but above all, he was a sincere friend - always had time to listen or run to grab a treat - making those around him feel seen and heard. Michael lived life to its fullest, from playing football since he was 6 years-old to off-roading, snowboarding, hiking, camping, and target shooting with his family. He expressed his creativity through drawing and gained cultural prowess while traveling the world with his grandparents.

Michael was a devoted son to two military veterans and made many sacrifices to support their service and demands of mission. He was a cherished brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend, and teammate. Michael’s gentle soul, quick wit, and uncanny ability to pop up out of nowhere will be forever missed by his parents, Paul and Jen; his big brothers Ethan and Tayler; his grandparents Colleen and David Merrill; and his extended family and countless friends who love him deeply.

Michael was preceded in death by his grandmother Remy White, his aunt Juel Sears, and grandfather Terry Ash.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a humble donation be made to the non-profit Riders Athletics football program, which played a significant role in Michael’s life via https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/riders-athletics.

Funeral services will be held Monday November 24, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. Family and friends may visit Sunday November 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Fruit Heights City Hall, 910 S. Mountain Rd. where all are welcome to attend, have refreshments, and share stories, laughter, and love in his honor.

Michael’s last resting place will be at the Kaysville City Cemetery.
