FRANCES SOFIA
Frances Sofia was born on May 13, 1927, on Baxter Street in Little Italy. From a young age, she was drawn to the heart of the Church, cultivating a deep love for Christ and a life rooted in prayer and service. Her family moved to Bensonhurst where she attended Bay Ridge High School and served as a catechist at her local parish. She had an adventurous spirit and loved playing handball, horse-back riding in Prospect Park, and climbing rocks near Ocean Parkway. It was at the Roseland Dance Hall in Manhattan where she met her husband, Peter. The two married, raised four children, and made their home in Boro Park, Brooklyn. There, Frances worked at Maimonides Hospital as a mental health professional and eventually became Director of Volunteers, a role that reflected her deep compassion and care for others.
Frances had a rich and varied career. She became a skin care professional and hair cutter, working for many years alongside her husband at their salon, Peter J. Haircutters, located at 45 Christopher Street in Manhattan. Her empathetic nature and capacity for guiding others made her a trusted ear to many of their clients. A lifelong learner and avid reader, she was a dedicated student of scripture and theology, studying in the Master's program at Seton Hall University.
During her many years as a resident of Montclair, New Jersey, Frances was an active member of St. Cassian's Parish. She and her husband, Peter, served as Eucharistic Ministers, and Frances led the RCIA process with great dedication. She also facilitated numerous Bible study groups and, later in life, worked at Sikora's, a local Catholic bookstore. Eventually, Frances moved to Greenwich to live with her daughter, Marian.
Frances is survived by her four children: James, Thomas, Dawn Elizabeth, and Marian; by her five grandchildren: Daniel, Vincent, Genevieve, Sophia, and Olivia and by her great-grandchildren Rafael and Aliana.
Frances passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, at the age of 97, just weeks shy of her 98th birthday. Frances will be remembered for her deep love of God, family, and friends, and her ability to stand alongside those who needed her most. Her wisdom, fortitude, and devotion will never be forgotten.
