In Memoriam
Franche "Asoub" Murat Assad
Sunrise: February 1, 1947 --- Sunset: March 17, 2025
"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."
2 Timothy 4:6-8
Franche Murat Assad was born on February 1, 1947, in the city of Gonaives, Haiti, to the late Anasta Assad and the late Francois Assad. She departed from this world on Monday, March 17, 2025. Franche was the second, in age, of ten children, five boys and five girls. During her later years, Franche was affectionately called "Mommy Franche" within the family, especially by all her nephews and nieces whom she loved, cared for, and handled as if they all were her very own children.
During her early years, Franche was the beneficiary of a strong catholic education and value system, as she completed her primary education at the "Ecole Saint Pierre Claver/ Soeurs de Saint Joseph de Cluny" des Gonaives. There, she distinguished herself as an outstanding student. Following the successful completion of her primary education, she began her secondary education in Gonaives. After the family moved to Port-au-Prince in 1966, Franche enrolled at Lycée Toussaint Louverture to complete her secondary education. There, again, she distinguished herself as an outstanding student, especially in the sciences. Following successful completion of her secondary education at Lycée Toussaint Louverture, she successfully completed the two major national examinations: Baccalaureat I and Baccalaureat II. Back then, successful completion of those two exams were required for admission to the national university system.
Mommy Franche travelled to the United States (Washington D.C.) in 1973 to join her older sister (Tagaure) to pursue her college/university education. After successful completion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum, she enrolled at Montgomery College (Takoma Park Campus). She later transferred to Howard University and successfully completed her Bachelor's Degree in Biology in 1979.
Sometime, in the early 1980s, encouraged by her sister-cousin Gladys, Mommy Franche moved to Boston, MA. While in Boston, she worked various jobs, including nursing home care. During this time, Mommy Franche gave birth to two wonderful children, Annie and Efrem. Both of them are now adults, residents of the Greater Boston Metropolitan Area. Annie is married to Architect Diderot Joseph. Their union has produced three beautiful and loving grandchildren for Mommy Franche: Jonathan, Asiyah and Daniel.
Working in nursing home care motivated her to enroll at Laboure College of Health Care where she successfully completed Nursing School leading to her Certification as a Registered Nurse. Following her nursing education, Mommy Franche began her nursing career in the Boston Metropolitan area, mostly in the city of Brockton, MA. Throughout her practice, she worked at various hospitals and, for many years, in nursing home care. There, she was well known for providing excellent care to her patients, and often developed close, family-style relationships with some of them. She always demonstrated a high level of empathy for all her patients and everyone who sought her assistance.
As indicated earlier, Mommy Franche was part of a family of 10 children. She was and still is beloved by all her siblings, her cousins (her brother-cousins and her sister-cousins), her nieces and nephews. She took care of all of them like they were her own. That is the reason that her nieces and nephews called her Mommy Franche, not Auntie. She was their second mom.
She always kept an open-door policy for all of us, and has extended her hospitality to family members in need of a place to stay, rent-free. One special way that she shared love with friends and family was to volunteer to cook extensive and delicious meals for everyone. We all devoured, craved for, loved and appreciated her rice and peas, her baked chicken, her roasted turkeys, her griots, her lasagna, her soups (soup joumou), her cha-ka, her conch, her seasoned lobster, as well as her cakes. During family gathering, she was always in charge. She was Our Leader. We miss her already.
Mommy Franche was deeply religious and enjoyed a special relationship with her Lord and Savior. She loved attending church and greatly enjoyed her interactions with her church family and the times they spent together during their annual international missions to various areas in the Caribbean. She spent countless hours studying the bible and praying with her prayer group. Everyone in the family respected her bible study time and her praying time, and knew not to disturb her during those times.
Mommy Franche was preceded in death by her sister: Gabélita, her father: Francois, her brother: Guyto and her mother: Anasta. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her loving daughter: Annie (Joseph); her loving son: Efrem; three sisters: Marguerite Tagaure (Mario), Mardochee (Pierre), and Carine; four brothers: Jean-Fritz (Mirlene), Jean-Claude (Lynda), Abdallah, and Fanfan (Alexandra); her loving grand-children; an adopted brother/special cousin: Jean Milien; a host of cousins, nephews and nieces, and a long list of dear and extended family members and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Church of God Christian Life Center on Saturday, 3/22, at 10 a.m. 839 Washington St. Dorchester, MA 02124. Visiting hours will be held for an hour prior to the service from 9-10 a.m. Burial at Blue Hill Cemetery, 700 West St. Braintree, MA 02184.
