Francis Howard Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 2, 2024.
Francis Fenelon Howard, age 86, of Clays Mill, Virginia peacefully passed away from natural causes on August 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 22, 1937 in Hanover, New Hampshire, Francis was the son of Clifton Frank Howard and Mildred Mae Cowdry Howard. He grew up with his sister Charlotte on a family farm in Woodstock, Vermont where he embraced the values of hard work and dedication.
Francis married Rachael Ann Bates Ayer in 1959 in Woodstock, embarking on a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. Together, they raised four children and welcomed many foster children and extended family into their home, creating a nurturing and vibrant environment.
Francis dedicated much of his professional life to the Southside Regional Group Home, where he served as director. His unwavering commitment to the well-being of others shone through in his joy for guiding residents on memorable outdoor adventures, including backpacking, hiking, canoeing, and climbing throughout the eastern United States. Of all his adventures, he particularly cherished his hikes on the Appalachian Trail, which not only brought him immense joy but also provided valuable lessons for his youth about perseverance, the beauty of nature, and the rewards of shared experiences. His passion for mentoring and helping individuals achieve their potential left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Known for his genuine smile, kindness, gentle nature, humor, and love of dancing, Francis was a beacon of warmth and compassion. His legacy of caring for others will continue to inspire and uplift those he touched.
He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Rachael; his sister, Charlotte Barr; and his brother-in-law, Al Ferrie. Francis is lovingly remembered by his children: Randy and Tina, Rick and Catherine, Roxanne, and Raemona and Joe. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Luke and Michelle, Chelsea, Mitch and Krista, Walter, and Hailey, as well as his great-grandchildren: Clay, Lily, Addy, and extended family, especially the Barr and Ferrie families.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Rick and Catherine Howard. A celebration of Francis's life will be held at a later date where friends and family will be invited to gather to share memories and celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who gave so much to those around him.
