Francis Henry Schommer

Francis Henry Schommer was born November 20, 1931 to Francis Joseph Sr. and Elizabeth (Weber) Schommer in Wayzata, MN. He was the 11th of 13 children and grew up on his family farm near Hamel MN (now Plymouth).

He attended the nearby Holy Name school through 8th grade.

He then worked on the family farm from that point on except for 2 years (1954-1955) when he proudly served in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. While in the Army, he developed his love of photography and obtained his GED. When he returned home, he continued farming and met his soulmate.

He married Germaine Hausladen on June 22, 1957 and the 2 of them were inseparable for the next 65 years. They bought his family farm and lived there for 3 years.

In 1960, they bought a 160 Acre dairy farm in Germaine's home town of Winsted MN and lived there until moving into town in 2019. From 2024 until his death on October 14, 2025, he lived at Cedar Crest Estate in Silver Lake where he touched the lives of the staff and residents right up until the end.

While in Winsted, he was deeply involved with Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. After selling the dairy herd he became an active member of the American Legion. He received several awards for community service as he was involved in various volunteer activities almost every day of the week. He had a steadfast faith in the Lord and loved spending time with his family. He passed on his virtues of hard work, integrity, selfless giving and a strong faith to his family.

He is survived by children: Paul (Ann) Schommer, Gary (Joi) Schommer, Peter (Marti) Schommer, Patrick (Lisa) Schommer, Jeff (Yvonne) Schommer and Peggy Schommer; nineteen grandchildren; twenty three great-grandchildren; a sister: Betty Ann Farr. He was beloved "Uncle Franny" to many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his wife Germaine (Hausladen) Schommer, grandchildren Joshua Schommer and Sandra Schommer, parents Francis and Elizabeth Schommer, brothers and sisters John Schommer, Marie (Robert) Munn, Joe (Mary) Schommer, Dorothy (Ralph) Pomerleau, Jenny (Arnie) Rambow, Roman (Betty) Schommer, Louise (Erwin) Arens, Susan (Robert) Benson, Rita (Bob) Pepin, Rose (Gerald) Dykhoff and Leo Schommer.

A Mass of Christian burial for Francis H. Schommer will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Father Matthew Wiering will be the celebrant. Interment with military rites Holy Trinity Cemetery in Winsted.

Visitations will take place from 4-8 PM on Friday, October 17, 2025 and Saturday from 9-10 AM, both at Chilson Funeral Home, Winsted MN. At the visitation, the Winsted Knights of Columbus will be leading a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by parish prayers at 7:30 PM. The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard will be present during the visitation and at the funeral.

Casket Bearers will be: John Schommer, Francis Schommer, Samantha Liebhard, Karla Broadrick, Barry Schommer, and Elizabeth Gaedke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the McLeod County Food Shelf or the American Heart Association.
