Frank George Kovach, 94, of Port Huron, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, in Marysville, Michigan. He was born on April 24, 1931, in Port Huron, Michigan, to the late Steve and Julia (Oli) Kovach.
He attended Port Huron High School. At the age of 17, he answered the call of duty and joined the United States Navy. Frank served with honor as a gunner mate aboard the USS Roanoke during its commissioned voyage in 1949 in Philadelphia. His service took him to the far reaches of the globe, from the icy expanses of the North Pole to the warm waters of the Mediterranean. His travels through the Panama Canal, to Casablanca, and on several Caribbean missions were among the highlights of his naval career. After bravely serving on the USS Roanoke's maiden voyage and subsequent missions, Frank received an honorable discharge in 1952.
Upon returning to civilian life, Frank became a Port Huron Police Officer for over 25 years and a proud member of the American Legion, where he continued to serve his fellow veterans and community. His work and association involvement were a testament to his unwavering commitment to service.
Frank's interests were as vast as the oceans he once sailed. He had a passion for reading, particularly history books, which allowed him to travel through time and relive the events that shaped our world. His love for travel extended to leisure as well, with the Bahamas and Aruba being among his favorite destinations.
Frank's life was enriched by his beloved family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Rosemary "Kitty" Kovach, for 48 years until her passing in 2023. Together, they raised a loving family that brought immense joy to Frank's life.
He is survived by his son, Frank K. (Karen) Kovach; daughters, Cynthia (Steve) Frazier, Linda (Leon) Armstrong, Joan Wille, and Mary Little; brother, James Kovach; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Cope; grandson, Nicholas George Zgieb; siblings, Liz (Kovach) VanZandt, Berniece Sanders, Steve Kovach, Mary Hamilton, Gus Kovach, and Joe Lipai; and nephews, Tim Sanders and Jay Kovach.
Private family services and interment will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Port Huron.
Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity-St. Joseph Catholic Church.
