Frank William Mitchell, known affectionately as "Mitch," passed away on August 18, 2025, at the Valley Hospice Care Center North after a short unexpected illness. He was born on September 27, 1937, in Weirton, West Virginia, to William Helen (Bl) Mitchell, who have preceded in death.
Mitch dedicated over 40 years of his life to Weirton Steel, where he held various roles in engineering, supervision, construction, and maintenance. His steadfast commitment and work ethic fostered both personal and professional relationships that reflected his dedication to excellence. A notable highlight of his service was his military tenure in the Army; he proudly served as a Parachute Specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division, being one of the first individuals to jump from the prototype C-130 aircraft in 1962.
Outside of his professional achievements, Mitch was known for his passion for aviation, particularly flying planes such as the Syan II Cessna 172. This love of flying symbolized a free spirit that extended to many aspects of his life. He was also deeply involved in his community, lending his talents to church-related projects and demonstrating a remarkable ability to make things that were both functional and meaningful.
Mitch's proudest accomplishments include living in Austin Lake since 1978 and cherishing the time spent with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years and his six children: Steve Mitchell of Tennessee, Wendy Walters of California, David Mitchell of St. Louis, Melissa (Brandon) Brown of Toronto, and Chris Orris of Steubenville. He leaves behind an extended family of great-grandchildren: Samatha, Megan, Matthew, Ethan Brown, and Colin Brown, who were a source of immense pride and joy in his later years.
Frank William Mitchell will be remembered not only for his professional contributions and military service but also for the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy will endure through the lives of those he touched both personally and professionally.
