Frank Samsel Obituary

95, A life well lived!
Frank was born in Cleveland, while in grade school his family moved back to his mother's family home in Olmsted Township, Ohio after his father was injured working as a Cleveland police officer. Frank grew up quickly, as a young teenager he worked at Baldwin Wallace, setting up chairs and tending the boilers. It was there he was asked to help pace a young hurdler (Harrison Dillard.) In High School he was an original member of the Olmsted Township Fire Department. As WWII ended, he was graduating high school and worked on the docks, eventually sailing for two seasons as a deckhand. He worked briefly for American Shipbuilding in Lorain, before being drafted for the Korean War. He served his country in Germany and returned home.
Upson Walton Company hired him as a travelling salesman covering Southern Ohio, WV, KY, and western PA. While living in Pittsburgh he met his wife Lois (deceased) and they were married for 45 years. In April 1958, he started his business Samsel Rope in the Flats of Cleveland and eventually purchased the Marine Division of Upson Walton three years later. He initially supplied wire rope and rigging to customers, following the Upson purchase he branched into the marine supply company. Samsel Rope & Marine began serving the marine industry throughout the Great Lakes.
In the late 1960's, the Cuyahoga River was covered with oil and debris. Several fires occurred, Frank decided to build a vessel that could clear debris and oil from the river. Using a boat builder in Erie, he built the Putzfrau, (German for Cleaning Lady,) which had a vactor system for removing oil and a crane for removing debris. He formed an environmental service company, originally Pollution Recovery Systems, which became Samsel Services.
Frank built his own ultralight experimental airplane and learned aerobatics in a biplane. Following his retirement, he remained involved with environmental education through the Great Lakes Historical Society, renamed National Museum of the Great Lakes (NMGL), and Metroparks. Frank continued to volunteer at the NMGL and participated in the moving of the museum to Toledo. Frank spent time actively working and supporting his faith community. He was also a member of the Associated Wire Rope Fabricators and Experimental Aircraft Association.
Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Lois (nee Brady) and his parents, Frank K. and Stella (nee Kujawa) Samsel and his sister Alberta Surman. He leaves five children: Kathleen Petrick (Stewart deceased), Michael (Joan), Marybeth Allen (John), Christopher (Carol), and Barbara Seciliot (David); five grandchildren: Jacob (Kylie), Marissa, and Nathan Samsel and Douglas and Gayle Petrick and one great grandson: Trevor Samsel; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass is Friday, January 23rd 10:30 AM, at Holy Spirit Parish, 410 Lear Road, Avon Lake, a celebration of a life well lived to follow in the Church Hall.
The family asks in lieu of flowers for donations to be made to National Museum of the Great Lakes 1701 Front Street, Toledo, Ohio 43605, or Holy Spirit Parish 410 Lear Road, Avon Lake, Ohio 44012

My second dad...my heart is broken for all of you but he is now with your mom.
I learned many things from Frank Samsel.
He was a very hard working man. When there was an oil spill in the middle of the night, off he would go.
When he got home he always had time for his family. It was a beautiful time for me to experience this amazing family. Dinners were spent altogether at the round kitchen table that they always made room for others. The round grill!!! I learned to grill at 8! It was great! I still eat butter on my crackers... Such a happy family, thanks to Frank and Lois. He was a pillar in my community. I don't know how he kept a business that he started from ground up, a happy family of 5 kids and his wife Lois, and got so much done. He was an amazing man. I cry at this time as I won't be able to tell him these things and just Thank You for raising me right alongside you children. I love all of them and offer comforting peace now and forever always. RIP Frank.

May the Samsel family find peace during this difficult time.
Spent a lot of days at the Samsel home growing up, and want to thank you all for the great memories, especially playing with those incredible all-metal toy trucks that Chris had, ghost riding our bikes at terrifying speeds up the drive then grabbing that huge rope hanging from the tree, lots of Flintstones episodes, and Barb´s excellent Rock drumming, seeing Pepper run around and play on those endless summer days, plus the wonderful smells coming from the ever-present classic black Weber grill-so many good times so long ago. Going to have a few crackers with butter in Mr Samsel´s honor now, and though very sad he had to go, it´s good to know that Mr and Mrs Samsel are together again.
Almost forgot-thank you for letting us cut through your yard so we could hang out with our friends, and for enduring the frequent Mud Bomb Wars!
Mr Samsel, you were one in ten million. Your contributions to shipping on our beautiful Lake Erie and your invention that cleaned up the river will not be forgotten!
You´re going to be missed....

My sincerest condolences for family and community, on the passing of our greatest localenvironmental hero. Not afraid to be way out in front of the crowd, investing himself for the Earth's lifeblood and teaching us all the existential lessons of protecting our region's waterways. Thank you Frank.

My condolences to the Samsel family. I had the privilege of working for Frank at Samsel Services Company 1986-93. The experience shaped the entire rest of my professional life for the better. Frank was both a visionary and pragmatist, a rare combination these days. Job well done, Frank, rest in peace.

My condolences to the Samsel family. Your father was a great man and you can see his legacy throughout his family. You know that he's in a much better place now with no suffering. He did so much in his life and really lived it to the fullest. He did so much for the city of Cleveland and it's surrounding area. I know you are all very proud of him. I have found memories of him and all of you. My deepest sympathies to everyone that knew him and know that his spirit will live on through all of the live city touched.

One of my best teenage memories was riding to work with Mr. Samsel and Mike when I had a summer job at Samsel Supply. We rode in his Chevy pick up with a manual three on the tree transmission. It was a typically modest vehicle for this great man; It was fun to hear him talk about the many topics that interested him. He was a great role model for all of us. A man of integrity, humor, family, and faith. Love, prayers, and condolences to the entire Samsel family.
