Frank Earl Stepney, a lifelong Plainfield resident and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and
uncle departed this earthly life into eternal rest on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Robert Wood
Johnson Hospital, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Frank affectionately known as "Freako" was born March 6, 1954, to the late Mike and Nan Jay
Stepney. He attended the Plainfield School system and later graduated from Plainfield High School
in 1973. Frank married his high school sweetheart Sharon Burroughs and from this union they were
blessed with their daughter Shaketa Shalann.
Frank was dedicated and hardworking. He began his career with the City of Plainfield's Department
of Public works where he worked for several years. He later transitioned to Lyons VA Hospital
where he continued his commitment to public service and retired in 2016 after 32 years of service.
Growing up Frank enjoyed running track, wrestling and playing basketball. He played for many
Plainfield community teams, and he also played for many years in the Shiloh church league. He
loved to showcase his impressive dribbling skills and his signature long-range jump shot - talents
that earned him the nickname "Freako."
Frank was a member of the Plainfield 8 Ballers POOL team, The Homesteaders Social club and he
was a lifelong member of the notorious and original "Dawgpound" crew. He was also an avid Giants
fan.
Frank was well known and loved by all. He loved to crack jokes and laugh. He was always the life
of the party. He loved to dance and was he was known for his beautiful singing voice. Frank was a
loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be sorely missed.
Frank was predeceased by his parents Mike and Nan Jay Stepney, brothers Michael Stepney, Steven
Stepney and George Stepney, sister Nancy Thompson, his grandson Brockeirr Mays, his son in law
Brock Mays and brothers in law, Sam Thompson and Hubert Lanier.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his loving wife of 21 years Sharon (Burroughs), his
daughter Shaketa Mays, grandchildren Brielle and Bryce and great grandson Finn, sisters Mary
Lanier, Evelyn Dixon, Sheila Gardiner (Robert), Tonya McNeil (Lee), brothers Brian Stepney, Tracy
Stepney and a host of nieces, nephews and close family friends.
