With deep respect and gratitude, we remember Fred Marlon Denney, whose life was defined by purpose, integrity, and remarkable achievement. He was a devoted leader, an entrepreneur, and a mentor to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Fred passed away in his home, surrounded by family and close friends, on December 14, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Clay County, Alabama, and moved to Oxford in the 1960s to seek better opportunities for his work and, in turn, for his family. Throughout his life, he distinguished himself through an extraordinary commitment to excellence. His professional accomplishments were many and lasting, marked by visionary leadership, hard-earned success, and a reputation for wisdom and loyalty. Some of these professional achievements included being a Chamber of Commerce member for 36 years; serving on the Chamber's Economic Development Committee, where he went on to serve as vice chairman and chairman for a combined 14 years; serving as a member of the RMC Board of Directors for 15 years; and serving on the Oxford Planning Commission. He also retired from the National Guard after 35 years of service and from Alabama Power Company after 19 years. He founded Denney Electric Company, later selling the business and retiring, only to go on to serve as Project Manager for the City of Oxford for 19 years. He never stayed retired for long. He approached every challenge with determination, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the work and lives of others. Beyond his achievements, he was a man of strong character and quiet generosity. He believed deeply in service, mentorship, and the power of lifting others as he rose. His guidance inspired colleagues, friends, and family alike, and his counsel was sought and valued by many. He served as an elder at Betta View Hills Church of Christ for 10 years and was deeply involved in the church. He was also a devoted family man and loyal friend, cherishing time spent with loved ones and finding joy in meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and simple moments. His presence brought strength and reassurance, and his love was constant and enduring. He was preceded in death by his parents; his seven siblings; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; cousins; and other family members. His legacy continues through his wife of 64 years, Martha Brown Denney; their children, James M. Denney (Teresa Denney) and Michele Denney Williams (Geoffrey Scott Williams); their grandchildren, Marcus Denney (Brooke Denney), Nicole Denney Mangum (Zach Mangum), Kesley Danielle Williams Rogers, and Geoffrey Chase Williams (Tamryn Williams); their great-grandchildren, Andrew, Cameron, Grayleigh, Wesley, and Ella Grace; as well as many other family members and friends. His life stands as a testament to what can be accomplished through perseverance, humility, and planning. While his passing leaves a profound void, his influence remains-carried forward in the countless lives he touched and the enduring impact of his work. He will be remembered not only for what he achieved, but for who he was: a man of honor, vision, and loyalty. His legacy-spiritually, professionally, and personally-will continue to inspire generations to come. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice and Alabama Cancer Care of Anniston for their compassionate and professional care during the last 1.5 years of his life. A special thanks to all family friends and extended family who have been there for Fred and his family during this time. Special thanks also to Sandra Hancock and Christie Renfroe Martin, who were tremendous sources of support for Fred and his family, especially in his final days.
