FRED JACOBSON Obituary

JACOBSON--Fred Fexlix Arnold, passed away at his home in Southampton on April 24 at the age of 98. Fred was a most gentle, kind and generous man who touched the lives of many. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Angela; his children Derek and Ellen, both of whom he was so proud of; his daughter-in-law Eugenie Roberts Jacobson; son-in-law Giles Clarke and grandchildren Marlowe and Lindon Clarke and little John (Jack) Jacobson, who brightened his last years with his sunny disposition and followed him into the Riverdale Country School, at a mere interval of 80 years. Fred was born in Lueneburg, Germany, immigrated to this country in 1938 and volunteered to return to Europe in the U.S. army. In 1945 he received a Silver Star for gallantry in action. After graduating from UNC at Chapel Hill with a degree in Comparative Literature, he embarked on a career as an editor with the German American Chamber of Commerce, working on bridging the two cultures and healing the wounds of the Holocaust and war. He spent most of his career as head of Public Relations for North America for BASF Corporation. Fred loved life, the opera and a good meal, preferably on the deck at his Southampton home or the SBTC, which he so enjoyed. He sailed and climbed mountains, braved white watering well into his seventies, but above all, instilled into his children a love of life, a positive attitude, and a sense of duty. Fred will be sorely missed by his family and friends who shared a full life with this amazingly strong and caring man.

Dear Family of Fred Jacobson,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Christine Schumacher and I live in Hamburg, Germany. I was born in Lüneburg. I just learned from my mother that her mother, my grandmother, was a housemaid in the household of Henry and Gerda Jacobson in Lüneburg. Her name was Alma Kathmann. I did some research and found about the story of your famliy in Lüneburg and all the terrible things that happened in Reichskristallnacht. I do not know why but I do have the strong feeling to get in contact with you to let you know how sorry I feel for you loss and about what happened to your family in Lüneburg.
I learned that your family had a deep impact to my grandmothers life. This is proven by some little hints she made during her life. You know, they say trauma or lets just say little "family orders" skip one generation and I think this is the case for me. So, let me say sorry. Sorry for your loss and sorry for what happened in Lüneburg.
With kind regards, Christine Schumacher

I am sending my deepest sympathy for the loss of a truly wonderful man. It was an honor working for him back in the late 1970's and early 1980's and I will never forget him. Sending my greatest regards to his family. With the highest respect and admiration, Libby Trzcinski
