Fred Orville "Dutch" Hughes Jr, age 87 of Cowan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Dutch was born on July 29, 1937, in Sewanee to the late Fred Orville and Maude Esther (Garner) Hughes Sr. He retired from the University of the South in 1993 after many years of service. Dutch was a member of the Midway Baptist Church in Sewanee. He enjoyed working outdoors around his home or in the garden and playing a game of horseshoes with his family and friends. In the evenings and on rainy days you could find him working crossword and word search puzzles and listening to gospel music. In addition to his parents, Dutch is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Hughes; son, Teddy Lynn Hughes; granddaughter, Valley Paige Hughes; stepdaughter, Jean Campbell; siblings, Kenneth Hughes, Roy Hughes, Charles Hughes, Teresa Holt, Nancy Gilliam, and Evelyn King. Dutch is survived by his daughter, Donna Goodman and Michael Hughes; grandchildren, Kara Crews, Katie Lewis, and Pamela Goodman; great-grandchildren, Kacie Marie Goodman, Kylie Jo Goodman, Jadelynn Dean Lewis, and Tristan Gregory Johnson; stepdaughter, Iva Evenson; step-granddaughter, Donna Lynn Nunley, Tammy Green, Kimberly Garrett and Jennifer Painter; brother, Thomas Henry (Jimbo) Hughes; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 10:00am – 11:00am at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with funeral service following at 11:00am from the chapel.
