Mr. Fred William Shaver Jr., age 91, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, GA. Fred was born in Garden City, AL on August 2, 1934. He attended Hanceville High School and graduated from the University of North Alabama. Fred is better known as Coach Shaver by all those who know and love him. From 1966-1973, Coach Shaver served as the head football coach at Southeast Bulloch High School. He took a brand new program that was 0-11 in 1966 and transformed it into a powerhouse, winning the South Georgia Championship in 1971 and State Championships in 1972 and 1973. In addition to being the head football coach, Fred Shaver was also the assistant principal, full-time math teacher, Head Coach of Varsity Baseball, and Head Coach of the JV Girls Basketball. He also served as assistant Varsity Girls Basketball coach.

Fred retired from coaching after winning those 2 state football championships and transitioned to the Bulloch County Board of Education where he was the Assistant Superintendent from July 1974 to July of 1992, spending a total of 35 years with the Georgia School Systems.

Fred Shaver was not only a superb coach, but he was also a very successful Army Officer. He served a total of 34 years in the Georgia Army National Guard as Field Artillery Officer. He progressed through the ranks from 2nd Lieutenant all the way to Brigadier General.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Stella Shaver, his first wife Ann Shaver, his second wife Gayle Shaver, his brothers Bill, Eric, and Douglas, his grandson Chad Starling, and his great grandson Archer.

He is survived by his children Linda Starling (Harry), Bill Shaver (Robin), and Jim Shaver (Michelle), his grandchildren, Daniel Starling (Georgia), Jim Starling (Jennifer), Courtney Shuman (Randall), Christy McCauley (Jay), Kyle Shaver (Katie), Kaylee Shaver, Trey Shaver, Hunter Shaver (Grace), and Andrew Phillips, his great-grandchildren, Rhyley Starling, Tucker Starling, Emmerie Starling, Will Starling, Asher Chapman, Pyper Chapman, Riddick Shuman, Anakin Shuman, Oliver Shuman, Valor McCauley, Duncan McCauley, and Jack McCauley, Pierce Shaver, Wyatt Shaver, Palmer Kate Shaver, and John Preston Shaver.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, Feb 27, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb 28, at 2:00 pm at Connection Church Statesboro – 1342 Cawana Road, Statesboro, GA with Pastor Wes Moye officiating, assisted by Pastors Chip Strickland, Rick Mitchell, Chip Grantham, and Kirk Hagan.

Interment will be at Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Fred's grandsons: Daniel Starling, Jim Starling, Kyle Shaver, Trey Shaver, Hunter Shaver, and Andrew Phillips.

Fred Shaver and his family request that memorial contributions be sent to Southeast Bulloch High School Athletic Department- 9184 Brooklet-Denmark Hwy. Brooklet, GA 30415.
