Frederick "Fred" Eugene Fields, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 18, 2025. He was born on November 9, 1943, in Washington, Indiana, to the late J. Floyd and Ester (Ray) Fields. Fred married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth (Stumpf) Fields, on June 14, 1969, at St. Roch Catholic Church.
Fred attended Washington Catholic High School (Daviess County) and graduated from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. He retired from Roncalli High School after 30+ years of employment.
Fred enjoyed his time with family, serving his community at St. Roch and Roncalli. He was often attending ball games, cleaning the gym afterwards, working the gates or volunteering at St. Roch, at fish fry's, bingo, the Mayfest, Monte Carlo's and any other events they had. He always looked forward to his monthly card night with the "old guys" of the Men's Club.
He loved to watch IU sports, especially men's and women's basketball, and softball. When he wasn't tinkering around the house or garage, he always had on a game, or the news, while he ate his stale crackers and sipped a Pepsi.
Known to many Roncalli grads as "Grandpa Fred", he would drive the team busses to games, and cheer loudly from the stands. He tried to never miss an event his grandkids, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews were in. He would attend all their sports games, plays, musicals, band concerts and more. If he could not be there, he would stream the games of his grandkids who were living out of state.
From spring to late fall, he loved to camp and always had his camping buddies everywhere they set up for the night. This included the St. Roch campers or the people he just met, anywhere he went, he made a new friend or two.
He deeply loved his family, and if you knew him, he loved you too. After retirement he loved to feed his birds and squirrels and sitting on the back deck watching them. Light yard work, and projects around the house kept him occupied when he was not going to a game or camping.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Fields; daughter, Dawn (Lisa) Fields; son, Michael (Maggie) Fields; siblings, Marilyn Helms, Ed (Diana) Stumpf, Bob (Mary) Stumpf, Bill (Barb) Stumpf, John (Lori) Stumpf, Ann Jansen, Rick (Terri) Stumpf, Joe (Willia) Stumpf, Betty Stumpf and Tom (Debbie) Stumpf; brother-in-law, Jerry Bockelman; sister-in-law, Sherri Stumpf; grandchildren, Damian (Carolanne Specht) Clarkson, Luciana Mae (Kassandra Cain) Fields, Aubrey (Brodie Mitchell) Fields, Morgan Fields, Dominic Fields, Mathias Fields, Aviana Fields, Hannah Fields and Josiah Fields; and great-grandchildren, Emerson Mitchell and Matthew Clarkson. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Edward "Jimmy" Fields; and siblings, Richard Fields, Shirley Michaels, Judy Bockelman, Mary Ellen Ochs and Fred Stumpf; and brother-in-law, David Jansen.
