Frederick Charles "Fred" Johnston, 81, of Stephens City, VA, died peacefully at his home, Sunday, March 24, 2024, with his family by his side.
Fred was born October 7, 1942 in Indiana, PA; son of the late, Charles Wilmer and Rachel Katherine Lockard Johnston. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Fred was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and 876 Engineer Battalion of Indiana, PA. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and a member of the Bowling Green Golf Club and Stone Creek Hunting and Fishing Club. He served as president of the Armstrong Indiana Homebuilders' Association from 1983-1985 and was an American Boy Scout Leader in the mid 1970's. Fred attended and was a member of Opequon Presbyterian Church.
He married Yvonne A. Shaffer Johnston on April 18, 1964 in Indiana, PA.
Along with his wife of 60 years, he is survived by his daughter, Kathie Jean Goymerac and her husband Patrick of Poplar Grove, IL; son, Robert Frederick Johnston and his wife Nicole of Stephens City; daughter-in-law, Lisa Johnston of Monroe City, MO; sister, Judy Marsh and her husband Ron of Carlisle, PA and grandchildren, Ian and his wife Joni, Matthew, Duncan, Nicholas, "favorite granddaughter" Linnea, David and Andrew.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Charles Johnston.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Opequon Presbyterian Church, 217 Opequon Church Lane, Winchester, VA 22602, with Pastor David Whitt officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Macedonia Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Johnston, David Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Patrick Goymerac, Nicholas Goymerac and Linnea Goymerac.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be left to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601; Shriners Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607; or Opequon Presbyterian Church.
