Shirley Ann Hummer Grim, 84, of Stephens City, VA transitioned home with Jesus on Thursday, March 13, 2025 after a brief illness.
Shirley was born on December 10,1940 to the late Carroll and Margaret Vorous Hummer in Winchester, VA. She graduated in 1959 from James Wood High School. In her early years she was active in AM-CA, (Amateur Musical Comedy Artists) where she performed at a local hospital, nursing homes, etc. It was through AM-CA that she met her beloved husband, Fred Wayne Grim whom she married on August 31, 1963 at Round Hill United Methodist Church. They were married for 45 years. She was employed by the City of Winchester for many years before retiring in 2002.
Family was of utmost importance to Shirley. She was proud to be the mother of Christine Grim of Broadway, VA, Katherine (Joseph) Dixon of Cross Junction, VA and her "adopted" daughter, Marilyn Metzler, of Richmond VA.
Shirley enjoyed making puzzles and playing games with her girlfriends and family. She was a caretaker who used her gift of encouragement through visitation and writing notes/cards. She found great joy in attending a local Wednesday morning Bible Study where she made many friends. Above all, Shirley loved Jesus and was a fierce prayer warrior who interceded on behalf of many folks, both those whom she knew and those she didn't. Shirley reflected Jesus to others through her unconditional love, gracious kindness, warmth and generosity.
Shirley is survived by siblings Virginia Poland, Robert (Barbara) Hummer, Lynnwood (Barbara) Hummer; step siblings Carl Brill, Jr., Kevin Brill and Yvonne Davy, along with many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, William Poland, stepmother, Helen Hummer and step-sister, Sara Baugher.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Ridings Chapel United Methodist Church. Friends will be received from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Burial will be on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 11:00 in the Ridings Chapel Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Winchester Medical Center for their compassionate and tender care of Shirley, her family and friends during her time there.
In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested that contributions be made to the Weekday Religious Education Association, Ridings Chapel Cemetery Fund, Blue Ridge Hospice and American Cancer Society (local chapter).
