George Walden Goode, 78, of Winchester died on October 8, 2025, after a short illness.
Son of the late Richard K. Goode and Evelyn Bywaters Goode, Mr. Goode graduated from James
Wood High School in 1965 and from William and Mary in 1969.
After college he worked as a waiter, a freelance photographer and a cook, and was an English
instructor at Morris College in Sumter S.C. In the early 1980s he served as editor of the Clinton
Times weekly newspaper in Clinton, MD.
He married Janet McMahon of Eastchester, NY, in 1982. The couple moved to Greece in 1984,
intending to remain for a year or so. In Athens, however, Mr. Goode began working as a tax
preparer for the Arthur Young Middle East tax office, and The Goodes remained in Athens for
three years. They moved to Paris, France, in 1987, where Mr. Goode worked for 20 years as a
senior tax consultant for Ernst & Young. He retired to Lyon, France, in 2008 and returned to
Winchester in 2019.
A poet and photographer, his photographs were exhibited in various galleries and shows in Paris,
including the Salon des Artistes Français in 1996. His poems have been published in several
British and American magazines including Stand, the Rialto, the Lyric, Orbis and Commonweal.
Some of his poetry is contained in his book entitled, This Moment is Gone, published in 2014.
He is survived by his wife, his sister Harriet Goode Smith of Winchester, his brothers Richard
Goode of Leesburg and David L. Goode of Winchester, and seven nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by his brother Charles Goode and his first wife, Judith Gray.
The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, October
16.
