Frieda Berlin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Herman Meyer & Son, Inc. on Dec. 29, 2025.
Frieda Berlin passed away at the age of 102. She was born in Ischenhausen, Germany, in 1923 to Max and Hilda Rieser, and emigrated to America with her family in 1926. Her family operated the Max Rieser Furniture Store on Market Street. She graduated from Shawnee High School and the University of Louisville.

In 1946, Frieda married the love of her life, the late Frank Berlin. Together they operated Berlin & Sons Department Stores in Louisville and Corydon, Indiana. They were devoted parents to two children: Mark of Potomac, Maryland, and JoAnne of Mill Valley, California, who passed away in July 2020.

Frieda was active in the local Jewish community, participating in the Sisterhood of Adath Jeshurun and Hadassah, and volunteering at Jewish Hospital. In more recent years, she was an avid bridge player, often playing four days a week. At The Glenview, she was beloved by many friends and known for her sharp mind and warm presence.

She is survived by her son Mark (Leslie), son-in-law Richard Sloss, and her grandsons Justin Berlin (Julie) of Washington, DC, and Brian Sloss (Shelly) of Mill Valley, California.

A private funeral will be held at Keneseth Israel Cemetery. A memorial ceremony will be held at The Glenview at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Keneseth Israel or the donor's favorite charity.

I have such wonderful memories of "aunt" Freida from my childhood. She was such a kind, caring woman with the biggest heart! I was indeed lucky to have known her.
