Frieda Snyder Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Mar. 7, 2004.
Frieda Grim Snyder passed away Thursday, March 4th, 2004 at the home of her daughter after a long illness. Two daughters, Renee Moss and Simone Snyder; and one granddaughter, Branden Moss, all of Richmond, Virginia, survive her. She is also survived by two brothers, Richard Grim and his wife, Lily, and Hans Stoete and his wife, Bep; one sister, Nora Scheffer and her husband, Lou; one nephew, Stephan Grim; and three nieces, Edith, Cinthia, and Miriam Stoete, all of Amsterdam, Holland, and whom she had recently visited. Frieda was born in 1932 in Amsterdam and survived the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. When she was 25 she moved to the United States with only her german shepherd as a companion. She lived in California and Texas before settling in Oakland, New Jersey for 18 years. She moved to Virginia in 1980. Frieda was a professional dog and animal trainer who received her formal training in animal behavior in Europe and had more than 32 years of experience in specialized dog training, including basic obedience, guard and patrol, narcotics, search and rescue, as well as training dogs as aids for the disabled and hearing impaired. She conducted private and group lessons at her school, Raemone's K-9 College in Mosley, Virginia. She donated her time to many shelters and rescue groups, including the Southside SPCA and the Amelia shelter and helped find qualified homes for animals. She also donated much of her time to educate animal owners as well as the volunteers on training and animal behavior. She had been active in the AKC, participating in shows and obedience trials. Her gift of understanding and training animals was unique and those who learned from her will continue her legacy by sharing her teachings and making the lives of our animal companions as well as their owners more fulfilling. In celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held by her family on Monday, March 8 at 6 p.m. at 4100 Denbigh Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23235. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Village Veterinarian Service Stray Animal Fund, 16419 Court Street, Amelia, Virginia, 23002.

Dear Frieda,
I agree that you were the original Dog Whisperer. Do you know I think about you everyday? I have lost a lot since your passing including Lou, but I feel your strength from afar. Milan is with me now and we have your van running with your name "Frieda" on the license plate, and guess what? We use it for dog transports, delivering dogs from kill shelters to their new forever homes. Thought you would approve!

Mom,

Nancy said she wanted to drink a beer with you when she got to heaven. I told her you didnt like beer, Annesette would be your drink of choice.

I know you are both free now and enjoying that drink together...we love you and miss you,

Frieda,

We only knew you for a short time. But can understand what a neat lady you was. Dale M. seems so lost without you and your friendship.

It really was great to know that you had that one last time to visit your family in Amsterdam. I loved the way that your eyes lit up when you talked about your brothers and sister there. All the great memories of your family and of your home.

We send our love to your family in Virginia and in Amsterdam,Netherlands that is left behind.

Ze zal altijd in onze gedachten blijven.

Frieda,

Lou and I both feel so fortunate that you came into our lives eleven years ago. What you taught us is with us everyday when we care for a sick animal, when we rescue an abused dog, or just simply enjoying a walk with our dogs, you are there. We love you,

Lou and Lou Ann Zell
