He was one of the most unique and intelligent people I have ever met since I was an altar boy. I spent so much time with him with another friend at the rectory at St. Roch's in Staten Island and shared knowledge, laughs and pizza. He influenced me like only a few others ever have. Nothing was funnier (to us anyway) then when we taped the famous "Farrah" poster to the outside of his window just before he did some pre-Cana counseling.
He got back at us though, trust me.
He taught me so much about what Xtianity was and wasn't, without me ever asking. He would be mistaken for John Lennon when he rode the NYC subways because of his hair, hat and dark glasses (He was visually impaired and had lots of trouble with his eyes at one point). He always told us to call him "Dave" while we were out, as he didn't want people asking for "confession" while he ate pizza out.
You had to know him to understand the humor in that, as he would offer everything he could; to anyone who asked, at any time. Thank you, Dave for all the wisdom and fun...
See you down the path.

Father Sears's obituary reflects his lifelong pursuit of excellence. Central to his theological studies was a fervent quest for truth, prompting him to keep abreast of developments in modern Biblical scholarship throughout his career. His life's work as a priest, scholar, teacher, and counselor touched the minds and hearts of many souls and emphasized that the message of Jesus Christ was intended for everyone struggling with life in a difficult world. His knowledge, wisdom, and kindness will be sorely missed.

My husband and I were parishoners of St.Thomas Church. It was a pleasure knowing him. He officiated at 2 of my great grandchildren's baptisms and a daughter's wedding. Always a smile! He loved my sausage bread and was always appreciative. My condolences for your loss. Jackie Dodge

We attended mass with Father Sears every weekend for years at St. Thomas“ church in New Hartford. Father was a brilliant orator and teacher, and we enjoyed his sermons, classes and discussions on the historical aspects of Christianity and the Catholic faith. His knowledge and perspective were incredible, and he taught us so much in the few years we knew him. The parishioners who attended his classes were enlightened, dedicated students, encouraged as we were to explore the historical aspects that brought us all to this point, and deepened our faith and understanding. He was a very special person, and will be missed by all those he touched every week at St. Thomas.
