Gary Canup Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Brien-Sullivan Funeral Home on Mar. 30, 2026.
Gary Canup, age 81, of Novi, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026. He was born on November 8, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Joe and Joy Canup.

Gary was a man of quiet strength, known for his reserved nature, adventurous spirit, and deep love for his family. He often brought energy and humor into everyday life with his familiar sayings, "Let's go, we have things to do!" and "When are we going to eat?" He had a hearty appreciation for life's simple pleasures-especially a good meal and his favorite ice cream sundaes.

A proud graduate of Plymouth High School, Gary continued his education at Michigan Christian College. In 1972, he founded Midwest Power Systems, a business he built with dedication and integrity, leading it successfully until his retirement in 2003. His entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic left a lasting impact on those who worked with him.

Gary was also deeply committed to his community. He served on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Commission for the City of Novi, contributing to the growth and development of the community he called home. He was an active member and past president of the Novi Rotary Club, where he formed many lasting friendships and gave generously of his time.

Outside of work and service, Gary embraced life with enthusiasm. He had a passion for flying his airplane, hunting, fishing, classic cars, and motorcycles-hobbies that reflected both his adventurous nature and appreciation for craftsmanship and the outdoors.

Above all, Gary was a devoted family man. His proudest moments were those spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Brent (Ginger) Canup; his daughter, Brenda Darby; his beloved grandchildren, Morgan and Margaux Canup, and Skylar and Tanner Darby; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Tucker, and Chase.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Joy Canup; his brother, Jody Canup; and his sister, Judy Canup.

Visitation will be held on 4-8 pm, Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at O'Brien Sullivan Funeral Home. A second visitation will take place on 10 am, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmington, Michigan with a service at 11 am, followed by a luncheon at Huron River Hunting & Fishing Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmington, Michigan, or to Shriners Hospitals.

Gary will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of family, and his adventurous heart. His legacy lives on in the lives of those he loved and the community he helped shape.
