Gary Davies Obituary

July 15, 1954 - June 21, 2025

Gary Sherman Davies, age 70, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully at home on June 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on July 15th, 1954 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to Marcie and Donald Davies. Gary lived a life rich in flavor, laughter, and love. A gifted chef, his passion for creative new recipes brought joy to countless friends, patrons, and family members alike. Over the years, he proudly owned and operated several beloved restaurants throughout Menasha, Oshkosh and Omro, including The Pier Restaurant and Lounge, Davies Café, Omro Main Street Café, and The Sherman House.

Gary was known for his dry wit and unmistakable, hearty laugh - a sound that instantly lit up any room and let you know exactly where he was. He loved deeply and fully, especially his wife, children and grandchildren, who were the heart of his world.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; children Laura (Michael) Cmeyla, Michelle Davies, and Eric (Kelly) Davies; grandchildren Brittnie (JP) Reed, Miranda Cmeyla, Elisabeth Cmeyla, Greyson Cmeyla, Alexia Schaeve, Dylan Schaeve, Ava Schaeve, Emrik Davies, Hudson Davies, and Maebry Davies; and great grandson Malcolm Reed.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Marcie and Donald Davies; his brother, Paul Davies; his father–in-law, Raymond Panske; and his grandson, Robert K. Schaeve IV.

Gary's legacy will live on in every shared meal, every story told, and every burst of laughter that echoes in his memory. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank Father Louis of St. Jude Parish, the Oshkosh ThedaCare Cancer Center, Donna (scheduler), Dr. Joyce Philip, Dr. Dan Kaiser, and the staff at Froedtert Cancer Center, Colton & Ashley Hansen, Kelly & Sarah Mertz. We would also like to thank all family and friends for your thoughts and prayers during this time.

In Lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Gary by cooking a favorite meal, sharing it with someone you love and laughing heartily, just as he would have wanted.

And NO - he's still not sharing the secret beer batter recipe.

A memorial service for Gary will be held Tuesday, July 1st, 2025 at 12:00pm at St. Vincent Parish, 1225 Oregon St, Oshkosh, WI. Visitation will begin at 10:00am until the start of the service.

My fondest memory of Gary was when I was heading into Copps to do some shopping and there was Gary walking in front of me with one grandbaby on his hip & the other one walking beside him holding his hand. He was quite the "Special Papa and what a beautiful way to begin a day!! Gary was the Corner Stone of your pfamily. We will miss him. My love and prayers to you, Sue and family.
