On August 12, 2025, Heaven welcomed a truly remarkable man, Gary William Fischer, at the age of 77. Surrounded by family, prayer, scripture, and song, Gary peacefully joined his beloved wife, Nancy, and found rest in the arms of his Savior. His life verse, Micah 6:8 - "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" - was the foundation on which he lived his life. His relationship with Jesus, and his family, gave him strength and hope as he courageously faced his battle with cancer.
Born to the late William and Irene (Casey) Fischer of Bay Village, OH, and preceded in death by his elder sister Lynn Cashion. Gary attended Andover High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University, and later received his master's from the University of Miami (Ohio). He proudly served in the U.S. Army, completing a tour in Vietnam before being honorably discharged. Over the years, Gary worked in both government and private sectors at the EPA, Ford, American Motors, Chrysler and Whiting Distribution, utilizing his degree in Chemical Engineering. For the past 25 years, he poured his energy into his own thriving business, Gary Fischer Handyman Services.
Gary had a lifelong passion for baseball, which led him to pitch for Western Michigan University, and train with the Cleveland Indians, before leaving for Vietnam. Afterwards, he stayed connected to the game by umpiring little league and high school games, keeping his skills sharp and his love for the sport alive. In addition, he was an avid golfer who could often be found at local courses, fine-tuning his short game.
Gary was also an accomplished musician. He spent high school and college years playing trombone in jazz band, and in later years, singing with the Barbershop Harmony Society. He loved playing guitar, and regularly shared his gifts by performing "Special Music" during Sunday church services.
Furthermore, Gary was passionate about understanding and teaching God's Word. He was committed to daily Bible reading and study after he came to know, love and commit his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He shared his gift of teaching for many years as an influential children's leader in the international Bible Study Fellowship program.
For 49 years, Gary shared a deep and joyful marriage with Nancy, who passed in 2020. Together, they touched countless lives, making everyone they met feel seen, valued, and welcome. Their love was filled with adventure - from camping in over 30 National Parks and creating cherished "G&G Adventures" with their grandchildren, to faithfully serving in their church's outreach programs. They were truly a very special couple whose bond was an inspiration to all who knew them.
Gary is survived by his sister Chris of Avon Lake, OH; his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Dan Whiting of Cheboygan; his daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Tony Facione; his sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Ang, and Bill and Liz Fischer; and 12 grandchildren: Joshua, Levi, Kaitlyn, Emet, Meira, Abby, Ellie, Bradley, Cayden, Joel, Gianna, and Christian
A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Saturday, August 30th at 11am at Salem Bible Church. Lunch will be provided immediately following the service.
To join the family in celebrating Dad's love of baseball, guests are encouraged to wear their best Detroit Tigers baseball gear. We think he would've loved that!
