Millersburg- Gary Dennis Groff was born March 22, 1951 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Milford and Virginia (Conrad) Groff. He graduated from Mid-Prairie High School and Iowa State University. On October 13, 1973, Gary was united in marriage to Janice Marie Bush at Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Gary was an Industrial Arts teacher at DR-M for the majority of his career. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North English. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing woodworking, gardening, spending time with family and daily coffee gospel hour. Gary died on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, at the age of 74 years.
He is survived by his children Kim (Dave) Tipton and Brad (Allison) Groff all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren Jacob, Katelyn and Andrew Tipton and Braiden, Addison and Braxton Groff; nine siblings Jim (Pat) Groff, Jean (Willis) Roberts, Judy (Curtis) Stoffer, Jerry (Debbie) Groff, Laura (Darrell) Hess, Tom (Chris) Groff, Susan Griffith, Sandy (Perry) O’Brien, and Sara (Tom) Hartman; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was preceded by his parents, wife Janice; and in-laws Don Bush, Jerry Griffith and Ron & Carol Mullen.
A funeral service will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 pm until service time. A general memorial fund has been established. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
