Gary Emerson Harley, 73, of Wilburton, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his daughter and loved ones.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the Choctaw Veterans Cemetery in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, with military honors provided by the Choctaw Color Guard.
Gary was born on December 14, 1951, in Talihina, Oklahoma, to Alfred and Rosa Lee (Parker) Harley. He graduated from Wilburton High School in 1970 and later attended EOSC. Gary began his military career in the United States Army in 1972 and proudly served for 21 years, retiring as a Sergeant First Class in 1993. His service included multiple overseas tours, time as a drill sergeant, and numerous decorations for his dedication and bravery.
During his career, Gary's family spent much of their time in the Pacific Northwest, where he became a lifelong Seattle Seahawks fan. Gary shared a special bond with his daughters, passing down his love for sports, music, and the outdoors. One of their most cherished passions was running, a love he instilled in them. He also introduced them to the joy of music, sharing his favorite songs. His love for the outdoors became a family tradition, whether they were fishing, camping, or hunting, creating lasting memories in nature. Gary's passion for these activities was a gift that his daughters and grandchildren continue to carry with them.
Gary's siblings remember him as their big brother, always watching out for them. He instilled strong family values that they have carried into their own families and teachings. His love, guidance, and protective nature will forever be cherished by those who were lucky enough to call him brother.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Rosa Deanne Harley Rhodd of Raleigh, NC, and Tammy Minks and her husband, Tony, of Nevada; his grandchildren, Bryce, BrieAnna, Malia, Knatiyah, Steven Jr., Nathan, Brayden, and Addison; his great-grandchildren, Braylon and Milani; his siblings, Janet Massey of Talihina, Alfreda Harley of Broken Bow, Alfred Harley Jr. of Okmulgee, Debbie Wesley and her husband, Jimmy, of Wright City, Doug Harley and his wife, Tammy, of Talihina, and Leslie Harley of Wilburton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Harley; his mother, Rosa Lee (Parker) Harley; his sister, Sharon Crank; and his grandparents, Leo Harley, Lena Battice, Emerson Parker, and Eve (Wilson) Parker.
Gary's legacy of love, service, and dedication will be cherished by all who knew him.
