Gary Dean Hicks, 67, of Bloomington, passed away at 2:37 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2023, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bloomington. Followed by His Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Mark Krylowicz officiating and Fr. Matthew Deptula concelebrating. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Normal.
Gary was born on March 24, 1956, in Danville, Illinois, the son of Hilton D. and Mildred (Briley) Hicks. He married Marcella Krylowicz in 1997 at Historic St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Bloomington. His journey in life and conversion of heart to the Catholic faith began when he was confirmed as a Catholic in 2017 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Surviving are his loving and dedicated wife Marcella; mother, Mildred Hicks of Mt Zion, IL; sister Cathy (Kevin) Highley of Decatur, IL; niece, Jessica (Kurt) Younghouse; nephews: Luke (Grace) Highley and Alex (Marie) Highley, all of Decatur; great-nieces: Monroe, Quincy, and Lincoln; great-nephews: Jonathan, Teddy, Maddon, and Harry. His in-laws include Rev. Mark Krylowicz, Mary (Mike Kaliski), Margaret (Paul) Nelson, Martha (George) Stuart, Monica (Ken) de Groh, Marlene (Christopher) Adams, Montana (Bruce), Melissa, Matthew (Valerie), Melody, Miles (Michelle), Martin (Trisha), Merrill (Katie). He is also survived by 26 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Harry Hicks.
Gary was a kind and gentle man, who touched the lives of many through his faith and music. He was blessed with God given musical talents. His golden tone voice and his remarkable unique harmonica talent brought listening pleasure to all who heard his music. Anyone who knew Gary understood that his love for music was a big part of his life! In his early years, he was a member of local and national bands: Recreational Bones, Uptown Rulers, and Stumpwhoopt.
Gary worked for over 20 years in food service at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
