Gary Floyd Hovis, 86, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on September 5, 2025. He was born and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He earned his BA in math at Westminster College, his MA in history at Oklahoma State, and his MBA in finance at Washington University (St. Louis). As a Lieutenant stationed in Germany, he served two years in the United States Army Artillery. With his wife of 59 years, Lucy, he settled in Chappaqua, New York. He pursued a career in New York City as an investment banker and utility securities analyst at Argus Research, where he received two "Best on the Street" awards from the Wall Street Journal. He lived with his wife, four daughters, and five dogs in Chappaqua, NY, during his working years.

Perseverance was his nature, and he worked hard at everything he did. He worked on railroads as a fireman during college summers, bicycled four paper routes during grade school, and mowed yards during grad school in St. Louis. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and uncle, volunteered at the First Congregational Church of Chappaqua, and helped out whenever asked. An extremely well-read person, he enjoyed his hour-long train ride to Manhattan, which permitted him to read every day. Loyal to the U.S.A., he believed in our Constitution, cherished our democratic history, and advocated limited government and individual responsibility.

Gary is predeceased by his honored parents, Fern and Floyd Hovis, and his beloved brother, Sherol L. Hovis, with whom he shared a special bond over family, Christianity, and our country. He has left behind to cherish his memory: his wife, Lucy Knowlton; his children and sons-in-law, Lucy Hovis Moore (Stokes), Margaret (Peggy) Hovis Coulter (Ken), Amy Hovis Arrowsmith (William), and Julie Hovis; and his grandchildren, Laura Moore, Emma Coulter, Claire Moore, Katharine (Katie) Coulter, Madeline Arrowsmith, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Arrowsmith, and Thomas (Tommy) Gary Arrowsmith, and his extended family. All of his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews will remember his readiness for wild chasing and fun games he invented, such as his favorite, "gotcha last," and for his many kindnesses.

His memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Kentucky Humane Society.
