On this day, we honor and celebrate the life of a remarkable man, Gary Lee Howell, age 72, who passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
A man who was lovingly known to his family as Dad, Poppie, and Papaw. Gary was a man who was a pillar of strength, a kind and loving man, and a man of unwavering honesty. Gary lived his life as an exemplary role model, always grounded with strong morals and the utmost integrity.
He was born on August 29, 1952, in Hopewell County, Virginia, and was the son of the late Bobby Lee Howell and the late Esther Long Howell. Throughout his life, Gary was an incredible athlete, especially playing football and softball. He seemed to possess a natural talent for any sport, and excelled almost immediately at whatever he attempted. Gary had been employed in the trucking industry. He worked as a dedicated truck driver, always punctual and dependable and had a deep appreciation for his many journeys throughout the country.
Gary served his country with great pride, honor, and courage as a United States Army Paratrooper in the 101 Airborne Division. His military career was one of strong leadership and loyal service to his country. Gary made the decision to choose a different path following his military service in the late 1970s, but his inspirational leadership qualities carried on through every aspect of his life. Whether facing life's challenges head-on or simply protecting those he loved and cherished, Gary was always there. Many of his friends during his younger years described him as a "tough dude" and a true protector! He never shied away from responsibility and when family or friends found themselves in difficult situations, Gary was the first person they called for advice or help, an obvious sign of a true leader who cared about those around him.
Gary's family was his heart and soul. His beautiful wife Sharon was the love of his life, and he was the love of Sharon's life. They were blessed on May 9, 1977, when they welcomed their son, Gary Lee Howell, II, into this world. This was the most wonderful blessing they could ever ask for. In the words of their son, "I appreciate all the things that Dad has taught me, whether it was working on cars, playing sports, or simply fixing things around the house. Most importantly, he taught me how to be a good man and made me a better person." The wonderful memories made on their father-son motorcycle trips and car show outings are precious times never to be forgotten. Gary was an inspiring Father who led by example. In the words of his son, "I looked up to him and always respected the way he carried himself and how he lived his life." What more wonderful words could ever be spoken.
We grieve for his family and cannot imagine the great loss his beloved Sharon feels without Gary by her side. They have always been close and so enjoyed many happy times of cross-country truck driving trips and motorcycle rides together. These memories she will hold onto forever. During the difficult time that Sharon was battling several back surgeries, Gary stepped up in an impressive way to take the very best care of Sharon. He was devoted to making sure she was comfortable and that she had whatever she needed during this time. Gary was a true blessing to her. Sharon's heart is broken knowing she will never again feel his loving hand on her face or his arm gently around her neck. However, those we love never leave us, but remain in our hearts forever.
As Gary grew older, he shared more often the words, "I love you," and he was always giving heartfelt hugs to those he cared for. We should all follow his example in letting our loved ones know just how important they are in our lives every day. Gary was an amazing man, and his influence in our lives has made each of us and our world a better place.
Surviving are his loving wife, Sharon Stamey Howell; his son, Gary Lee Howell, II, and his wife, Lisa Marie; grandsons Tyler Brayden and Conner Alexander; his sister, Lillian, and many good friends
