Gary Long Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bunnell Funeral Home Inc - Millville on Feb. 5, 2025.
Gary H. Long, 81, of Millville passed away on Tuesday February 4, 2025 at Emmanual Center for Nursing and Rehab, Danville. He was born March 16, 1943 in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Harold and Harriet (Stackhouse) Long.
He graduated from Millville High School class of 1961. Gary worked as a quality control supervisor for TRW and later Textron. He operated a gun shop at his house in Jerseytown, and later opened a retail and repair shop in Millville selling hunting and fishing equipment. Once that closed, he continued working out of his garage at his new residence.
He joined The Little Fishing Creek Rod and Gun Club at 18 and was active not only in shooting but also as treasurer. He spent many years at the ice cream stand they operated at the Millville Carnival using his quality control skills to assure the patrons received a quality product. He was a life member of the Millville Fire Company.
He was a fifty-year member and Past Master of Washington Lodge No. 265 F&AM Bloomsburg, a senior member of Caldwell Consistory and a member of Irem Shrine.
Gary was a charter member of International Benchrest Shooters where he was "Shooter of the Year" several times. He and his wife, Helen, were both active shooters and accumulated many trophies over the years. He was well respected as an accomplished gunsmith, building bench rest rifles for shooters throughout the United States and Canada and built the rifle Peggy O'Keefe of Wisconsin used to win the Hunter Class National Championship.
Gary is survived by his daughter Tina Straub, and two stepsons: Earl "Skip" Mordan (Cindy), Mark Mordan (Bonnie), as well as two brothers Dave and Robbie Long. He was known as Poppy to his five grandchildren: Eric Mordan, Tiffany Straub, Danielle Straub, Jenna (Mordan) Anzelmo, and Joshua Mordan and seven great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to his face.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife the former Helen Phillips who passed away on January 19, 2014, and brother Ed Long.
Masonic services will be held Monday February 10, 2025 at 7:00 pm at the Bunnell Funeral Home Inc., 179 E. Main St., Millville. Gary was a friend and built several Benchrest rifles for me over the years. He built some great ones. My condolences to all those who will miss him. We are indeed diminished.

I knew Gary and Helen through our mutual love of Benchrest shooting. Gary was a smart, smart person, a craftsman and a true gentleman. The World is a better place for Gary having been here. My prayers to all his family and his many friends.
