LOUDONVILLE: Harold "Hersh" Ray Long passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026, in his home surrounded by his family at the age of 74.
He was born on February 18, 1951, at home in
Butler, Ohio to parents Leroy & Susie (Chrastina) Long. He married Susan Sellers on December 27, 1978. The pair just lovingly celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.
Hersh worked as a truck driver and later as a dispatcher for Cowen Trucking. He retired after 35 years of devoted service. Hersh was also a crew member of the Cowen Truck Line Race Team serving both as a member of the pit crew and as a semi-truck driver transporting the racecar.
Hersh loved spending time with his family, most recently in his pool with his kids and grandkids. Hersh loved the water and was always the first to jump in the ocean on family vacations! He enjoyed working in his yard or tinkering in his garage. In his spare time, you would find Hersh riding his side-by-side in Bergoo, West Viriginia, while spending time with his brothers and family. As a proud member of the American Legion Post 257 for over 40 years, most Thursday nights, you would find him hoping to, "win it big," in the Queen of Hearts drawing. Forever a lover of NASCAR, he was an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt and enjoyed collecting Earnhardt memorabilia. He loved dogs, especially, "Buttons" and "Cocoa," and was never without one in his lap while in his recliner. The Christmas season will never be the same without Hersh, as he decorated his house and yard from top to bottom in lights and decorations. He was the true, "Clark Griswold of Exterior Illumination!" Amongst his rough exterior, Hersh had the kindest heart. He was always one to lend-a-hand to anyone in need. Whether it was plowing driveways or gardens for neighbors, helping to fix a car issue or pitching in for home repairs, he was usually the first to arrive and the last one to leave.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Long; his children, Brian (Amy) Banbury and Tiffany (Josh) Campbell. Lovingly remembered as, "Pa," by his seven grandchildren; Hayden (Ashley) Banbury, McKenna Bradley, Evan, Owen, Avery, Ashlyn and Irelyn Campbell and as, "Pauly," by his four great-grandchildren; Eleanore and Sophia Bradley and Dean and Emmett Nye. He also leaves behind his siblings; Ed, Robert and Ronald Long and Deanna (Robert) Snyder along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Hersh was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Susie Long and his siblings; Janet (Ron) Page and Alma (Joe) Skoog, sister-in-law, Janice (Robert) Long and nieces Jamie Snyder Walls and Tricia Long Kehl.
The family will receive friends at calling hours on Saturday, January 17, from 12 to 2 p.m. at New Hope Community Church, Loudonville. A celebration of life honoring Hersh will be held immediately following calling hours with Pastor Rob Paterson officiating.
Contributions in Hersh's memory may be made to New Hope Community Church.
