Gary Lee Said, 81, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, August 2, 2024, at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa.
A celebration of his life will be held at 3 P.M., Monday, August 12, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 2 to 3 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
Gary Lee Said was born on April 1, 1943, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Vern and Sylvia (Teters) Said. He grew up in Maquoketa and was a 1962 graduate of Maquoketa High School. Gary had four children from a previous marriage, Gary Jr., Debbie, Troy, and Amy. On September 19, 1976, he married the love of his life, Viola Jean "Vi" (Kupfer) Von Essen in Maquoketa, Iowa, and together with Vi's children of Kathy, Amy, and Christine, the blended family was complete.
Gary was the longtime manager of Fawn Brook Estates Mobile Home Park in Maquoketa. Additionally, he worked as the manager of Pamida Stores throughout eastern Iowa, finally landing in Maquoketa to stay. He later worked for Wells Plumbing and Heating. Lastly, he owned and operated Gary's Home Repair business in Maquoketa for several years.
Gary enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, and most importantly spending time with family and attending his children's and grandchildren's events.
Those left to honor Gary's memory include his children, Gary (Julie) Said, Jr. of FL, Debbie (Todd) Thomas of South Carolina, Troy (Patti) Said of Bettendorf, IA, Kathy Hunter of Maquoketa, IA, Amy Von Essen of Davenport, IA, and Christine (Michael) Hayward of Maquoketa, IA; 18 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Viola "Vi" Said on April 9, 2015, infant daughter Amy, brothers Donald, Ronald and Rodney, sisters Betty Wirth and Dolores Bendixen, and a son-in-law Russell Hunter.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Gary Lee Said memorial fund has been established. Funds from the memorial will be directed to Mill Valley Care Center.
