Henrietta - Gary Robert Thompson, 86, of Rochester, New York passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025.
Gary was born in Rochester, NY on August 18, 1939, and married the love of his life, Phyllis Duckworth Thompson, on July 23, 1960. He is remembered as a caring father, inspiring teacher and coach, loving grandfather, and devoted husband.
Gary first met Phyllis in a combined first and second grade class at the elementary school a few blocks from their homes. He was an active student at Charlotte High School in Rochester, voted "Most Versatile" and elected president of the junior class then student body president his senior year. Gary excelled in sports including wrestling, basketball, volleyball, and especially track and cross country running. His studies continued at SUNY Cortland where he ran track and cross country, studied chemistry to pursue a career in education, and married Phyllis. Gary received a scholarship to study chemistry in graduate school at the University of Northern Iowa. He and Phyllis welcomed their daughter, Gayle, during their year in Iowa before moving back to teach and coach in New York State at Wayne Central, then Rush-Henrietta, where their son, Rick, was born.
Gary built his career as a chemistry teacher and coached track and cross country in the Rush-Henrietta school district and served as high school vice principal at both Sperry and Roth high schools throughout the 1970s.
Gary moved to Victor Central Schools in 1980 where he again taught chemistry and coached girls cross country, boys cross country, and boys track until 1998. He was inducted into the Victor Central Schools Hall of Fame in 2004. While there, the Girls Cross Country Team had 237 wins under his leadership. The girls won 13 Finger Lakes League Championships, 15 consecutive Section V championships and 174 consecutive dual meet wins. The program was rated No. 1 in New York State in 1985. In Boys Cross Country, the team had 276 wins under his leadership. The boys won seven Finger Lakes Championships and three Section V Championships. Coach Thompson retired in 1998 as the Most Winning Coach of New York State Cross Country with 640 wins. In Boys Track, the team had 92 wins. They won seven Finger Lakes League Team Championships and five individual New York State championships.
In 1977, Gary Thompson began exhibiting and selling his photographic images. His work is included in over four hundred private and commercial collections throughout the United States and Canada and although it is primarily shown in the east, it is displayed from coast to coast.
In 2005, Gary and Phyllis partnered with a great group of other local photographers to establish Image City Photography Gallery located at 722 University Avenue in the heart of ARTWalk in the Neighborhood of the Arts to promote their work and that of others.
Specializing in limited edition landscapes and seascapes, Gary's goal was to create mood and feelings in the minds of those who view his images and to project a harmonious and peaceful coexistence between man and nature. When observers speak of his prints as if they were paintings, his concept of painting with light is confirmed. Hoping that his work would promote an appreciation of the environment, he emphasized the romantic and positive beauty of the world.
Gary has had solo artist shows at the Century Club, the Tea House at the Downstairs Cabaret, and at Compo's Photography Center. For three years he and Phyllis were the Artists in Residence for Touché D' Artiste at the Hungerford Gallery. In 2004 he and Phyllis taught photography at the Conference of the Arts on Star Island, New Hampshire.
In addition to exhibiting and selling his prints, Gary taught photography courses for many schools and organizations in the Rochester Area. He taught courses for introductory, intermediate, and advanced photographers in the Rush-Henrietta Continuing Education Program. He and Phyllis traveled extensively across the United States and led tours for photographers to the Canadian Rockies, Olympic National Park, Vermont, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and to the coast of Maine. Gary and Phyllis donated prints for sale or auction to non-profit organizations such as Channel WXXI, Victor's Dollars for Scholars Fund, The Chocolate Ball, Breast Cancer Foundation, the Adam Walsh Center, and others.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis; children, Gayle Schueller (Randy) of Austin, Texas, and Richard Thompson (Sarah) of Greece, New York; grandchildren, Aren Thompson, Lexie Schueller Richards (Mjnari), Garrett Schueller, and Jackson Schueller.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret "Peggy" Thompson and Robert Thompson, and his sister, Judy Thompson Cripps.
Gary's Memorial Service will be held Sunday, August 31st at 12 PM at the Interfaith Chapel of Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, 3325 Winton Road S.

I met Gary when I was in 7th grade and he had just arrived at Wayne Central High School in Ontario. He started a cross-country program there, and we were undefeated in the county for six years. He was always enthusiastic and upbeat and positive. Most of all, he always cared -- about his students, about the guys on the team (unfortunately girls were not allowed to participate in those years), and about people in general. He was, in the hi.ghest sense, a decent human being and a great coach. Sorry to hear of his passing, but he lives on in many memories. - Jack Kelly, Wayne '67

To the Thompson family, please accept my heartfelt condolences. Gary´s passing has saddened both my wife (Laura Foster Hainsworth) and I. It also brought back some wonderful memories of your husband and father. Laura and I were chemistry students of "Mr. Thompson" and both went on to get advanced degrees in Chemistry and Chemical and Environmental Engineering (Laura, PhD from University of Maryland)(Mark, MS, University of Maryland). In fact, from our AP Chemistry class (Gary´s first year to teach the AP course) there were 3 PhDs, 3 Chemical Engineers, 1 Industrial Hygienist, 3 teachers, and one graduate from MIT. That is pretty remarkable and not just a coincidence. Gary was an inspiring teacher who guided his students through difficult content with skill and wit. I also remember Gary sharing his photos of the national parks and one in particular, a picture of the cable route on Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, inspired me to visit and climb those cables several years later.
I was lucky to be a member of the track team and have Gary as a coach. His planning and attention to detail was remarkable. He coached and encouraged in such a way that you always wanted to do your best for him. I remember him telling me to get a second place in a race and when I took first he was frustrated with me. I didn´t realize that he wanted me to save my energy for later races that he needed points for the overall team score. It was about the team and not about individual races. I have applied that and many other lessons to my life since then.
He was kind as well. I remember a time when my girlfriend (now my wife) needed a moment to talk in between classes. He recognized that what we were discussing was important, left us in his room and told us to shut the door when we left. I thought that was amazingly human of him and solidified me as a Gary Thompson fan for life! Thank you for sharing him with us and I hope that he realized how much he influenced his many students and athletes in positive ways. Sincerely, Mark Hainsworth

A very big hug to the Thompson family! Coach and Teacher Thompson was an incredible human being. I got to experience his chemistry teaching, coaching, and photography. The best part of his chemistry classes is when he showed us incredible photos he had taken of some of America's gems in National, State, and local parks. I'm sorry but I remember the photos more than the chemistry. A number of years ago my Mom gifted me one of his framed prints.

I remember Gary Thompson the most as my cross-country and track coach. He knew how to bring the Victor team together and score as many points as possible at meets. Mark Hainsworth and I were just remembering at one meet he asked a few of us to run multiple events and for certain events to hold back some (i.e., didn't need to win every race). He wanted us to score points in all of our events but not overdo it in one event to mess up another one. He was a brilliant Coach with his strategies!

During HS, my family life went through troubling times. Running for Coach Thompson was what kept me together through discipline and setting and reaching goals. Through his encouragement, I felt motivated to succeed. I learned the lessons of sportsmanship and team camaraderie. In the end, he was a valuable teacher in several aspects of my life.

Gary was the Class of 83's graduation speaker. Curt Brantl recalls him mixing up a jar of water and dirt. The dirt came from cleats of hard-working athletes and other sources. Then he mixed up the jar to make mud. His message was "Don't muddle around" in life. It took me awhile to learn that lesson ...

The legacy left behind by Gary Thompson is incredible! He will be missed tremendously.

A Victor hero. "Nail it to the wall!" Was Gary´s cheer before any test his students took. Always cheerful, enthusiastic. It was an honor to be his colleague.

Mr Thompson helped me turn around my life in 10th grade. I was a student in his Chemistry class. He saw a picture at the HS Open House of me running the 50 yard dash. He recruited me to start running for VCS. I wasn't exceptional, but it did help me become the man I am today. Your passing saddens me, I still have one of your framed Mendon Ponds prints in my collection.

My sincere condolences to all the Thompson family. Thank you for sharing your husband and father with hundreds and hundreds of young athletes and students over the years. Gary Thompson was a truly great man. A man of many talents. He shined by being a role model to many and because of that his spirit lives on. Gary Thompson was like a second father to me during high school at Victor in the mid `80s. I was blessed to be one of "his runners". I missed him when I left for college and was so honored to have him attend my wedding a few years later. The world is a better place because Gary Thompson lived! His spirit and goodness lives on in all those that were blessed to know him.

Our thoughts & prayers to all of Gary's family & friends. All three of the Nelson children had Gary as a wonderful teacher and coach in the Victor Central School District. I also had the pleasure of knowing & working with Gary as a school board member for six years. A kind, caring, devoted teacher & coach who has shaped the lives of hundreds of students in such a positive manner. His artistic talents were also amazing. He lives on in all who knew & loved him.
