Gary A. Tipping

Gary Tipping went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 7th, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born November 8, 1945, in Toledo, to Norman and Florence (Altman) Tipping, and grew up in Monclova, Ohio. Gary graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from the University of Toledo. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and several other states.

In 1968, Gary married Irene (Bettinger), and together they raised eight children: daughter, Andrea (John) Kanfeld; and sons, Matthew (Julie), Edmund (Nicole), Daniel (Rachel), Peter (Blythe), Jeremiah (Christina), Joseph (Eliza), and Benjamin (Katherina). He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; uncle to 17 nieces and nephews. In 2018, he mourned the loss of his son, Peter.

Gary was President of SKJ Engineering Associates, Inc. for many years, and previously held teaching and engineering roles at the University of Toledo. His extensive career included working at AVCA Corporation, McDonnell, Proudfoot & Assoc., Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout, and SSOE. In 1981, he was honored as Young Civil Engineer of the Year by the Toledo Section of the American Society of Engineers.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968, Gary served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division, receiving several commendations, including the Bronze Star.

A man of deep faith and service, Gary was a longtime church leader, Boy Scout leader, and served on the boards of Toledo Christian Schools and WLMB TV40.

He lived his life in the ethos captured in Psalm 25:4-5, "Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long."

He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children and grandchildren; and his sisters, Joan (Charles) Falkenburg, Sandra (Peter) Aument, and Brenda (Tab) Brown. He was preceded in death by his son, Peter; his parents; his sister, Linda (Edward) Falk; and his brother, Mark.

A visitation will be held for family and friends from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Friday, February 20, at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Road, Toledo, OH 43614.

The visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., with the funeral service to be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 21st, at Harvest Lane Alliance Church, 5132 Harvest Lane, Toledo, OH 43623. Interment will be private.
