It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Gene Britt, who left this world on November 29, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on May 5, 1941, in Columbus County, NC, Gene was a friend to many enriching the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Gene’s life was marked by a deep commitment to service. He spent 33 years at the Tobacco Research Station, Oxford, NC, retiring as a Supervisor—a role in which he inspired those around him with his steadfast leadership and compassion for teaching. His dedication extended beyond his career as he served as a Bailiff at the Granville County Sheriff’s Office and as Chief of Police in Stovall, always embodying the true spirit of community.
Affectionately known to many as "The Man The Myth The Legend” Gene’s warmth and infectious sense of humor drew others near. He was an exemplar of kindness, spreading joy wherever he went. Gene found happiness in life’s simple pleasures like fishing, camping and spending time with his family especially his grandson’s.
Gene’s legacy is carried on by those he loved most: his devoted sons, Roger Britt (Lisa), Billy Britt (Kathy), and Tommy Britt (Tina); his daughter, Cheryl Anne Britt; and her furbaby, Sarah Jayne. He is also survived by his sisters, Alice Lou Gooden, Deborah Wyatt, and Faye Britt; his grandsons, Matthew Britt, Brandon Britt, and Randy Britt (Kayla); and great-grandchildren, Katherine, Mason, and Hudson. Gene leaves behind a large extended family and countless friends, all of whom were touched by his gentle spirit.
Though Gene now rejoins his cherished parents, James Pink Britt and Nellie Tyner Britt, his beloved wife, Nancy Wyatt Britt, and siblings JP Britt, Jr., Wayne Britt, Willa Grainger, and Shirley Britt, his presence will be dearly missed on this earth and fondly remembered by those whose lives he brightened. Gene’s legacy is one of warmth, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends. The memories he created will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind an indelible mark on every soul he encountered.
The community is invited to honor Gene’s life on December 4, 2025, at New Horizons Baptist Church in Oxford, NC. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. All are welcome to join in remembering a truly unforgettable presence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to New Horizons Baptist Church, 3490 Sterl Carrington Road, Oxford, NC 27565, in honor of Gene reflecting his lifelong commitment to faith and community.
