Gene Autry Long, born on September 22, 1940, in Person County, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on February 24, 2025, at Duke University in Durham County, North Carolina. He leaves behind a legacy that reflects a life dedicated to hard work, family, and community.
Gene enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Supervisor for Loxscreen, dedicating over 30 years of his life to the company where he was known for his strong work ethic and leadership qualities. His commitment to excellence set a standard for those who worked alongside him and contributed significantly to the success of his team.
A proud and devoted father, Gene is survived by his daughter, Tonia L. Coates, and his son, Phillip Long. He cherished the connection with his family, celebrating life's milestones with his extended family, which includes numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and Shirley's children, all of whom will remember him with love and admiration.
Gene joins in eternal rest with his beloved spouse, Shirley Hicks Long, and his parents, Lottie Wagner Long and Jesse Clay Long. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph Long, Harold Long, Bobby Long, John Ennis Long and Bonnie Rex Long, along with his sister, Odell Long Moore. Gene also mourns the loss of his sons, Gene Carlton Long and Duane Long, who will be missed deeply by those who knew them.
In reflecting on Gene's life, it is clear that he made a significant impact on those fortunate enough to have known him. His strong presence, hardworking nature, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones will endure in their hearts forever. The memories shared and the legacy left behind will continue to resonate within the family and beyond. He will be remembered not just for his accomplishments but for the warmth and kindness he extended to everyone around him.
