Gene A. McCarty, 95, of Columbus, GA passed away peacefully at Columbus Hospice on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Born on August 4, 1930 in Dothan, Alabama, Gene’s family subsequently moved to Columbus, Georgia where he remained until his death. He was a proud veteran of the US Army where he spent most of his time stateside. Following his service in the army, he spent his career in sales working for Kinnett Dairies, Borden Food Company, and finally, Southern Foods, and retired in 1992. Those who knew him will remember his incredible sense of humor and his generosity with his family. His hobbies include golf and reading.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fern and Nellie Faye, and siblings, Camille, Armand, Gail, and David, and his late wife, Helen Adams McCarty (the mother of his 4 children). He is survived by his second wife, Rosa Brasington McCarty, his brother, Gibson McCarty, his children, Shirley McCarty Chaplin (Aldean), Sandra McCarty Fuller, Debbie McCarty, and Alan McCarty (Cathy). He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Stephen Jenkins (Stephanie), Phillip Chaplin, John Chaplin (Tara), Justin McCarty, Mary Margaret Bigham (Derek), Jack McCarty (Tatum) and Joshua McCarty, and great grandchildren, Sarah Grace Jenkins, David Jeremiah Jenkins, Waylon Bigham, Winter McCarty, Boone Bigham, Salem McCarty, Murphy Bigham, and Millie Bigham. The family wishes to thank all of those from Columbus Hospice who played a part in his care for their kindness and support.
