George Robert Alspaugh
January 19, 1939 – June 16, 2025
George Robert Alspaugh of Lexington, KY, formerly of Knoxville, TN, passed away at the age of 86 on June 16, 2025. Born on January 19, 1939, George was the beloved son of Raymond Marion Alspaugh and Helen Louise Siple.
George was a proud graduate of the University of Tennessee where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1961 and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1963. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and several honor societies, including Tau Beta Pi. As a co-op student, George worked for several companies while in college including ALCOA, California Electric Power Company and IBM.
In 1963, George and his wife, Sally, moved to Lexington, KY where he began his long career with IBM working primarily in the development laboratory. In 1990, he transitioned to Lexmark International until his retirement in 2002 after achieving 39 collective years with the two companies.
Outside of his profession, George was active in church and community. In addition to volunteer roles within the church, he was also involved with Habitat for Humanity and constructing ramps for the Realtors Community Housing Fund. He was a member of the Lexington Cotillion Club and the Lexington Singers as well as being honored as a Kentucky Colonel.
George's hobbies included spending time with his family, woodworking, bridge, photography, boating, and reading. George and his wife, Sally, enjoyed traveling together. Some of his fondest travel memories were from Ireland, Peru, China and various European countries.
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sally; two daughters, Beth Fields and Catherine (Barton) Rendel; four grandchildren, Harrison, Ruth Lindsey, Luke, and Lila; and his sister, Jo Ann Alspaugh. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Kirkendol.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
Visitation will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home at 3421 Harrodsburg Road on Saturday, June 21 from 3pm to 5pm.
