George F. Barringer

1942 - 2026

George Barringer of Elmira passed away on February 16, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on February 10, 1942, in Troy, New York, he was educated in the Troy, NY public school system. George graduated from Troy High School in 1960, where he lettered in varsity track. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country for four years, achieving the rank of A1C. After military service, he attended

Spencer Business School in Schenectady, New York to become a court reporter. George served New York State and Chemung County as a court reporter until his retirement in 1995.

George was a member of the National Rifle Association, Pine City Sportsman Club, and the ELKS for many years. He was a past member of the Elmira Country Club and the Park Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He directly supported community organizations such as the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA. He committed to causes dedicated to community, freedom and American history. He was an avid Civil War reenactor. George loved his dogs, the many days he spent at Crooked Lake, NY, and at Eagles Mere, PA with his brother-in-law, "Skip".

George was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Brand Barringer, his parents George E. and Lois M. Barringer, his sister Lois Nelligan , brother-in-law John "Skip" Brand. He is survived by daughter, Nina Barringer (Steven) of Florida, by brother, Richard Barringer (Barbara) of Virginia, sister Marjorie Boone of Oklahoma, sister-in-law Mary Brand Kemberling of Maryland, sister-in-law Dorrie Brand of Pennsylvania, and many grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family would like to express gratitude to George's longtime friends Pam McCarthy and Rob Howe for their devotion, care and assistance during George's physical

struggles.

George is deeply missed by all who knew him. The families would like to thank the Arnot Odgen Medical Center ICU staff for their professional care during George's stay. A private ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of George's many organizations or any community support organization.
