George Dossett Obituary

George Dossett EDISTO ISLAND - George Franklin Dossett, 86, of Edisto Island, SC, entered his Heavenly Home on June 7, 2025. He was born on February 23, 1939, in Todd County, Kentucky, to the late Bennie Warren Dossett and Mable Lee Thompson Dossett. George made Edisto his home in 1988. After working for Fairfield (now Wyndham) for a time, he took a leap of faith and started his own landscaping business, a venture that would define his legacy on the island. Arguably the hardest working man on Edisto, George quickly became one of Edisto's most respected and beloved figures. Affectionately referred to as "Mr. George," he was a friend to all who knew him. He cherished his family and friends deeply, and his passions included the music of George Jones, cheering for the Kentucky Wildcats, rooting for the New York Yankees, and supporting the Washington Commanders. George was preceded in death by six brothers: Kenneth Clayton "Jake" Dossett, Douglas "Doug" Warren Dossett, Delmar Thomas "Tommy" Dossett, Roy Gene Dossett, Allen Street Dossett, and James "Jim" Dossett; and two sisters: Dora Lee Dossett and Zelmar Kathleen Dossett. He is survived by his loving children, Sheryl "Sherry" Leeper (Nicholas) of Edisto Island, SC, and Brian Dossett (Megan) of Greenville, SC; five brothers: Gordon Nelson Dossett of Adairville, KY, Robert Peter "Pete" Dossett (Ruth Ann) of Elkton, KY, Bruce David Dossett of Fairview, KY, Roger Glenn Dossett (Cheryl) of Elkton, KY, and Charles Hubert Dossett (Elizabeth) of Hopkinsville, KY; and two cherished grandchildren, Ann Katherine "Anna Kate" and Thomas "Tommy" Patrick Dossett both of Greenville SC. A celebration of George's life will be held on June 20, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Edisto Beach Baptist Church. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in remembrance of a man who touched so many lives with his kindness, hard work, and unwavering love. A service and burial will follow in Kentucky in July, where George will be laid to rest among family and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Edisto Beach Baptist Church, Bellview Baptist Church in Allegre, KY, or the University of Kentucky general scholarship fund. These contributions will honor George's generous spirit and his deep devotion to his faith, his community, and his beloved Kentucky Wildcats. Your thoughtfulness in remembering George in this way is deeply appreciated.

Sherry and Brian,
Your father was my friend in so many ways. We would laugh at our advancing ages and talk about the community. When cutting my grass he would always cut more than I paid him for because as he said, "It needs it" and of course he was right. A special person that we all will miss so much. John

Oh George! I just love you so dang much! From the very first time I met you and you told me that Conway Twitty joke I knew we were going to get along just fine. Little did I know how much my family and I would grow to love you and realize just how special you would become to us! I will miss going to dinner every time I come to town. I will miss fussin with you about the trash not being bagged by the guests. I will miss you never knowing how to mess with that old flip phone. I will miss the stories about you going to see George Jones and how you met him. I will miss you telling me you are just getting meaner every day when I asked you how you were doing (we both knew that wasn´t possible!) I will miss just calling to make sure you were doing okay and checking on you. Dang it, I will just miss you old friend! But I know I will see you again! Can´t wait! Make sure you watch over all of us until we get up there with you. Love you George!

George! Loved by so very many folks here on our island! I will forever miss our talks as we would swing on my bench underneath my home. He certainly loved his family, George Jones, the Kentucky Wildcats, and the New York Yankees. I smile as I write this remembering all the hours I spent helping him sort through all his text messages on his outdated phone. He always gave the best hugs. I will miss his sassy, caring personality and genuine concern for all his family and friends. My friend for many, many years. Love you, George! Now rest.
