Poultney, Vermont, on May 26, 2024.
George was born 11/02/1936 in Holyoke, MA and raised in Belchertown and Granby. He attended Belchertown High School, where he met the love of his life, Judita Greenan Dupont. They were married in May of 1957 and together had six children. In 1967 the Duponts moved their family to Jamaica, VT before eventually settling in Poultney, VT in 1978.
George had a long and successful career in construction, project facilitation and quality assurance. Over more than 60 years, he contributed his skill, expertise, and uncompromising work ethic to a wide range of transportation and civil infrastructure projects including the installation of I-91, the building of Church St. in Burlington, the restoration of VT roadways after hurricane Irene and the construction of wastewater treatment plants from Florida to Maine. He worked for several highly respected companies throughout his career. At 85, George retired as a Resident Project Representative from A&E Engineering in Essex, VT after more than 15 years with the company. His long career was a testament to his drive, ambition, intelligence, and profound sense of responsibility to his family.
George had a deep love for children, dogs, and horses. He was a devoted fan of the New England Patriots, a lifelong supporter of the Boston Bruins, and a car racing and boxing enthusiast. He was a skilled gardener, photographer, woodworker, and keeper of tropical fish. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. George was an avid hunter and spent countless hours in the woods, shooting his last deer at the age of 86. He loved the water and was an accomplished boatsman, swimmer, and fisherman. George was particularly proud of his Morgan stallion, D'lair Sundance Kid (Curley), whose offspring are another cherished part of his legacy.
George was predeceased by his parents, George and Ann Dupont, his beloved wife Judita Greenan Dupont, and his son Vincent Dupont. He was the oldest of four children and is survived by his siblings Ann Reynolds of
Redwood City, CA; Patricia Greene of Pittsfield, MA; and Darrel Dupont of
Newfane, VT.
He leaves behind five children: Angela Dupont Meyer (Geoffrey), Michelle Frost (Barry, d. 1992), Colette Dupont Schlieben (Dan Ehrenbard), Janine Jeffers (Tim), and Derrick Dupont (Valerie).
George was the grandfather of 16: Jacki, Kate, Tim, Amanda, Heather, Cody, Alex, Louisa, Thea, Leland, Andrew, Sofia, Matthew, Eddie, Cassie, and Seth. He was the proud great-grandfather of 18 with more on the way.
George leaves behind a rich legacy in his numerous and beloved family as well as the roadways and civil infrastructure that serve New Englanders every day. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Rescue Companies of Fairhaven, Wells, and Poultney, who rushed to his aid.
