George Smith Durden, a devoted husband, cherished family man, proud veteran, and passionate football fan, passed away peacefully, at the age of 91, on April 15, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family and friends. Born on September 20, 1933, in Soperton, Georgia, George was the beloved son of the late William and Claudell Smith Durden.
With a steadfast spirit and a heart for service, George proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he dedicated his professional life to the U.S. Government as a civil servant, working diligently as a Management Analyst.
George's life was marked by deep love—love for his family, love for Jesus, and love for his community. He was a man of quiet strength and unwavering faith, always placing others before himself and offering encouragement and wisdom to those around him.
Among George's greatest joys was football, and few things brought him more pride than cheering on the Warner Robins High School Demons. He was a loyal fan through and through, and his voice could always be counted on in the stands, win or lose.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife, Elaine Durden; children, George S. Durden, Jr. (Cindy), Valicia Midkiff (Fred); stepchildren, Christopher D. Gunn and Brandon Roberts; grandchildren, Amanda Luton (Scott), Ramsey Midkiff (Beth), George S. Durden, III, Erica Durden, Jake Durden and Jackson Durden; great-grandchildren, Brantley Luton, Grayson Luton, Bennett Luton, Sally Kate Midkiff, and William Midkiff; and caregiver and nurse, Cynthia Pace (Charles).
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home with a memorial service immediately following in the chapel. George will be laid to rest in Westview Cemetery.
